Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Eternal Sonata Screens or What Great Cel Shaded Graphics Look Like (no 56k)

It looks great but it doesn't seem much different from say DQ8 but in a higher resolution.

I tried DQ8 (actually someone gave it to me when they sold their PS2) and I don't remember the graphics in it looking even remotely close to the pictures in this thread.  It's not just a matter of a higher resolution.

Right. I've seen and played DQ8 for many hours (and my GF has played it for hundreds of hours).

First off, the characters are no where near the quality. In DQ8, most characters had rather blocky lines for the cell shading. The backgrounds were also very standard PS2 fare.

Eternal Sonata has litterally no blocky lines for any character, some of the best light/HDR shading of any game (much less Cell shaded), and the backgrounds are of incredibly higher quality. Not only this, the backgrounds have an animated Windwaker-esque quality - just alot, lot better.

leo-j - if you can do these graphics on the Wii, why didn't Namco make it for the Wii instead?

Stop saying everything can go on the Wii. It gets very, very tiring and annoying. If a game can be graphically equal on the Wii, then by all means, make it on the Wii. Unfortunately, you cannot. It's not do-able. I've never seen a single Wii title that looks remotely as graphical as any major X360 title. Just face it: since the X360 has about 10x the Wii's hardware abilities, it just *might* be able to do things the Wii cannot. This isn't bashing the Wii, it has some good graphics, but only compared to last-gen. Comparing a system that has a 800mhz processor to one that has 3, 3.2ghz is just insane, and stupidity on your part.

Until I see a Wii game do Gears of War graphics, you haven't convinced me. Likewise, there are no cell shaded Wii games that have been made that have come close to IdolM@ster or Trusty Bell. I am sure they'll come out with some very good looking ones, but not as good as Trusty Bell.

And again, why not compare HD videos at 720p versus the Wii's 480i and try to judge then. It's entirely fair, since one of the reasons the Wii can't export to 720p like the X360 is because the hardware just can't do it.

1) Let's start with me agreeing that not all games can be done on the Wii, including Eternal Sonata (at least at this point in the Wii's life). But:

2) "I've never seen a single Wii title that looks remotely as graphical as any major X360 title." (Emphasis added by me) There's a thread up with videos of Forever Blue AKA Endless Ocean. ( http://vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=5151 ) If you watch one, then you will have seen just such a game.

3) "the X360 has about 10x the Wii's hardware abilities" I think that you are exaggerating quite a bit here, which is very bad form when castigating someone else for his hyperbole. Example: 729MHz x10 = 7.3 GHz > 3.2 GHz. If the 360 is truly TEN TIMES more capable of graphical prowess than the Wii, I am unaware of it and would like to see proof.

4) How many cel shaded Wii games have there been at all? When we see some maybe we will be able to judge them against those the 360 is getting.

5) Unless I am greatly mistaken, and in this case I'm not, the Wii does 480p graphics instead of just 480i. Yes, it's still significantly inferior to the 360, but it's an important difference. BTW, do you realize you just said, 'The Wii can't do 720p graphics because it can't do 720p graphics'?

Endless Ocean? Are you kidding with us? No offence but please stop trying to compare the Wii's graphics to the 360's.

I don't like cell shading usually except crackdwon maybe but here I have to admit it's amazing.... I'm just affraid that the story is a bit to japanish style for me (i'm a big fan of jap animation but not their RPG, and I don't like chopin i'm JS bach fan lol) but the game does look really really really great.....

hum I might look dumb but what is the 56k warning ???

I'm surprised though that a game of such Japanish baseline and a graphical quality and style like that is not selling better in japan and making 360 go up more

2. I saw the video(s). They look nothing as good as a game like Kameo - a first-gen X360 game. Thats not saying FB doesn't look good, but the second I saw the pink oceanic trees, I giggled. Theres no lighting depth, and the trees look very flat.

3. The Wii has ONE 729MHz processor and ONE core. The Xbox 360 as one processor that has THREE 3.2ghz cores. So 10x is 7.29ghz and the X360 is 9.6ghz. Not only this, each of the cores has 2 threads further expanding the computational power of the CP Units on the X360.

 4. I wasn't *just* comparing cell shaded games, but any games (if I was just saying Cell Shaded games, why'd you bring up Forever Blue anyways?). For Cell Shaded games, you do have Eyeshield 21, Crayon Shin Chan, GT Pro, Bleach: Wii, Gundam: Scad Hammers, No More Heroes, and Negima!? Neo Pactio Fight!   So it's obvious that the Wii has plenty of cell shaded games. Many look great, but still fail greatly in comparison to IdolM@ster, Crackdown and Trusty Bell.

5. Actually, your right - the Wii can export max resolution to 480p in PAL and NTSC territories.

leo-j is just mad because it hasn't been announced for the PS3.

I agree with you: I've never seen cel-shading this good (they look like high-res artwork in the screenshots, lol) and I doubt the Wii can produce these kind of graphics. Similar, maybe, but not the same (and not 720p). I think the reason this looks so good is because of the high number of polygons, kinda hidden by the fact that it's cel-shaded (possibly, I don't really know) and I don't think the Wii could handle that.

This game is on a completely different level than Wind Waker, and Nintendo would find it VERY difficult to reproduce these graphics on the Wii. Like I said, something similar maybe, but not this detailed, and it would take alot more work to squeeze enough power from the Wii. Still, Wii will have its fair share of beautiful games. But there's a reason this is coming to 360, not Wii or PS2.

Oh yes I am schorching with anger >_>

Is this the same Endless Ocean that is in this screenshot?

Nintendo fans are really getting more arrogant by the second, I suppose it's human nature when you're winning to keep asking for more even if it's not possible. Now they expect a much weaker and cheaper console to do things better than the other two do.

Get over it, the best looking games this generation will come out on the 360 and PS3.

While I completely agree that the Wii cannot compete with the 360 and PS3 in terms of graphic power, it can still make better looking games stylistically than some of the top 360 and PS3 games. Case in point: Super Paper Mario.

Gears of War may look realistic and shows off some truly amazing things, but Super Paper Mario looks better (of course I think Lost Planet looks better than Gears of War).

-edit-
And I should mention that my current best looking game of all time is Odin Sphere, a PS2 game. This may change once I finally get around to playing the Eternal Sonata demo, but right now, my number 1 (and number 2--Okami) are PS2 games.

Comparing Paper Mario and Gears of War and saying one looks better is like comparing Apples and Oranges.
