Forums - Website Topics - Stop using the word "Jap"

Honestly, please stop. Jap is a racial slur, and has no place being used here. I'm sure most of the people who use it don't realize it is a racial slur, but it wouldn't hurt to learn.

Who's using that derogatory term? You should report it.  There was a member who was banned for using that very same term here in VGChartz.

Agreed!

And yes, I did ban someone for using that term specifically as a derogatory remark.

I think the instances wangfoo is refering to are instances like this "thats the problem with jap developers" or "I wonder how it will do in the jap market" Is it so hard to toss in an "anese"?

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Is Jap., specifically as an abbreviation, okay? I know I sometimes do that.

According to my Oxford American Dictionary Widget -

Jap | jap
noun & adjective Informal offensive short for Japanese.

That's it, no other non offensive use possible.

I think for the sake of respect, to just spell it out.

I would think, however, this could be acceptable (example):

"The majority of Japanese Developers (JD) are familiar with ray-tracing  advancements. JDs specialize in special effects, after all."

This way, you spell it out the first time, then abbreviate, and it saves you time anyhow - makes you happy, makes those who consider the term derogatory happy as well.

I think the issue of seeing "Jap." together, abbreviated or not, may be insulting to others regardless of your best intentions, so probably best to leave it out.

I disagree. I don't think ppl are using it in racism terms. I myself use three letters for countries ie USA, Aus, Jap, Eur etc. I am no way a racist. Maybe look at the context that the word "jap" is in.

I never read many ppl using it in a bad way.

  Unleash The Beast!

End of 2011 Sales: Wii = 90mil, 360 = 61mil, PS3= 60mil

Some racist people use an abbreviation in the first half of the last century, and ruin it for everyone. What a spastic reaction.  Speaking of which, can we still call English people Brits?

I agree with Squall, I think it's 'old' that 'Jap' is used as a racist remark...

I don't know if I have particularly used it or not, and I don't think I do but I don't think people should take racial offense if it is describing a particular market.

I hate that people take offence to words sometimes when they are said in a non-offensive way, there are certain 'taboo' words but I don't think Jap is one of them personally.

Jap is used all the time in FFXI even by Japanese players.

If it were truly that offensive, there would be many banned players. I agree that when used wrongly it could be offensive, but overreacting to a simple word (IE devoting a thread to it) only makes things worse.
