Anyone doing an X58/i7 build soon?

The Extreme 965 is currently about $500 less than the most current QX series quad core 2 extreme (9775). Interesting.

Only big drawback to switching to the i7 architecture means buying a new x58 mobo (about $400) and three sticks of DDR3 RAM (3x2GB about $300) for triple channel use.

Mobo will be a deal breaker for most ppl.. phenom 2 is gonna be socket AM2.. cheap-easy upgrade vs powerful wallet burning powerhouse..

RAM as well. You won't be reusing any DDR2 memory sticks, and very few people have been willing to switch to DDR3 mobo/RAM due to the low performance to price benefits.

That alone tacks on $700 to your "upgrade" which may as well be a fresh new build.

I'm still sticking with Intel next generation over AMD, simply due to performance and OC adaptability. It's worth the price for a high end enthusiast rig.

If I want to do a cheaper build, I'll do one around an E8400 or E8500 and OC it to 4ghz on liquid with reused components.

you forgot vs. the old core 2s that are still reasonably priced and are close to the performance of the high end intels, while still whooping the phenoms.

Technology marches on and n and on like some sort of dispatcherater machine. I look forward to the day when this new i7 business is as cheap as my current PC.

True.. but a $300 phenom 2 upgrade will look mighty sweet to a lot of old pc users especially since AM2 is over 3 yrs old.. its gonna be the same old story..

LOW END: AMD
MID-HIGH END: intel

There's a lot more headroom for the i7s, but for most that's not the issue so much as the initial cost of entry (new premium mobo/premium RAM + CPU).

For now, the vast majority of users will be better served with a simple core 2 duo set up, at least as far as gaming goes. The prices haven't immediately plummeted though (they haven't even changed).

It probably won't be until some new killer app is released that really makes the i7 seem beneficial that the adoption rate begins to take off. Right now, it's going to be the hardware enthusiasts who are doing X58/i7 builds.

I will probably skip the "tick" phase of Intel's current and wait instead for the "tock" update late next year.

well unfortuantely I've heard they will be AM3 sockets so.... ya... new PC all together either way.

Wonder how they sold over the weekend. The official release date was 17 November.
