Forums - General Discussion - Lcd or Plasma for Wii

It looks like people are satisfied with Wii + HD TV combo... Seriously I'm not biased right now. It did look bad. Maybe you just haven't seen how sharp graphics should be...

Ok... I'm leaving right now...

Your prices are pretty low. I've spent almost ~$850 on my 23" LCD... It's pretty well equipped though (4000:1, 8ms, 2 HDMI, PIP...)

I'm pretty sure you were just watching it on a crappy TV.  A good HD TV can upscale Wii games quite nicely.  You are also assuming that because we own Wiis we have never played PS3s and 360s (I have played both on HD TVs).

What's really happening is you are seeing people satisfied with a certain level of graphics... we don't feel we need high graphical power.  I want a 360, but not for the graphics, just for the games it plays.  I have no desire to buy a PS3 because it doesn't have any games I want, despite it's nice graphics.

I have an 42" Plasma TV because I am a social person and I like to have people over to watch movies and play games on my TV.  That and I like watching movies on the large screen .  You are going to need to get used to the fact that just because many people own HD TVs doesn't mean people still don't want Wiis.  I wouldn't be surprised at all Kber if more people were playing Wiis at the end of this generation on HD TVs than PS3s or 360s.

And this is why I waffle...lol....How about ambient light reflection on the Plasmas....do u have to have it completely dark to not see reflection?

I can't say I've noticed reflections whilst using my Plasma, The model I have has an average review score of 9/10 so I'd trust it.

I play my Wii on a 42 inch Samsung Plasma (does 720p) with component cables. I got it on sale for $1200 around the time of the Super Bowl last year (always the cheapest time to buy TVs). It plays Wii games beautifully. I have heard reports of Wii games having jaggies on LCDs, so I guess from what I have heard and from my experience I recommend you go with that, though if you aren't going to wait till the Super Bowl it will probably cost you $1500. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8251633&st=samsung+plasma&type=product&id=1169512522199 That's the one I bought, though like I said I got it for $1200 at Super Bowl time.

Okay, this one I have some experience with. My friend has a 42 in. Samsung plasma and I can say for sure that the 42 inch Aquos LCD looks better on all fronts.

That's odd, my friend uses a 32" Sharp Aquos and he gets Jaggies on his Wii and PS2 games. His movies look sharper, though that's to be expected since the screen is smaller. Sadly, he paid more for his 32" Aquos than I did for my 42" Samsung, which looks signifficantly better for Wii games.

I suppose the 42" Aquos could have better picture than the 32", but that seems very unlikely to me.  Have you ever seen Wii games played on it?  Also a 42" Aquos will cost him much more money (looking at $1800 plus from what I've seen).

$2,184. Ouch. Nope, can't do it. I can't talk myself above 1,500. Looks nice though. Maybe I should just wait til after the holidays.

That is exactly what I would suggest.  During or after the holidays, you'll be able to pick up a good 1080p 42" in your price range.  Right now, probably not unless you go with something like Westinghouse.

I completely agree, wait for the holidays.  Especially around Super Bowl time TVs go on sale for really cheap.

Does he use the component input?  I sit about nine feet away from my set and have never noticed jaggies.

Of course, now that you said something, I'm probably going to see them everywhere.

Thanks for ruining everything

My End of 2008 Hardware Predictions (console only):

Wii : 50 million

360: 28 million

PS3: 24 million

These predictions were made on January 3rd and won't be revised

Doessn't matter a thing what knind of TV you go and buy. Just how much you want to spent on it. The more you pay the better the TV.

For the Wii TV's who support 720P(HD ready) with a comonent input are just perfect. Such a TV will set you back ~600 euro's (¿¿??dollars) only other thing you need is a Wii-component cable and youre Wii looks great on a flatscreen.

On the whole LCD vs Plasma battle: Plasma is in my eyes the better technologie but it lost the battle against LCD and ATM you can get a supirior LCD TV for the same price.

Another suggestion: for less than $1000, i bought a Sanyo PLV-Z4 projector in promo, and it's just fantastic! I use the HDMI for my home-cinema (in enhanced 720 p), and the component for my Wii (in 480p), and it looks great! You've got the best out of your Wii, with an image 3 to 4 times bigger than any LCD or Plasma out there... and the price is ridiculous compared to these expensive TVs, so you'll be able to buy some more games for your Wii! Believe me, it's a very nice set-up, and a great experience... full immersion in front of your screen!  :)

"A beautiful drawing in 480i will stay beautiful forever...

and an ugly drawing in 1080p will stay ugly forever..."

I've got a Sony Bravia LCD TV, HD Ready, and most WII games look great, others look like crap, because developers made crappy graphics. Most of my Gamecube games support 480p and look hot!. Oh yes, don't forget to buy a original component cable from Nintendo and put your WII screen option in Progressive / 16:9 and really you'll get improvement. WII Sports doesn't look really messy unless you don't use component cable, yes, then it does.

Edit: mine is just 26 inch. What is it with you people and large TV screens, they're only bad for your eyes :P

lol I'm sure if it looked good before it will keep looking good.  His may be older than yours too, but yeah he uses a component as well.  I wonder if there really is a picture quality difference or some difference in the input and upscaling that makes the 42inch Aquo look better than the 32, or if it's some other factor.

More on the original topic though, this is a horrible time of the year to go out TV hunting.  All TVs are full price right now, so wait till the holidays.  Oh and be SURE to use Component cables, cause any HD TV will give you jaggies without component cables.
