You need graphics hardware to run pretty much any game out there, so thats the best place to use copy protection. If it gets cracked they can simply update the protection every time a new version of Direct X comes out.

Kind of an awesome idea, though.

People would scream murder and it would possibly kill Linux gaming dead since they don't have native Direct 3d.

But it would seriously hurt piracy, a lot.

Wouldn't that just drive everybody who didn't want to play by MS's rules to use OpenGL?

If that was the case, why aren't consoles wining against piracy? Isn't hard to mod a console, and once its done that's the last you have to think about it.

I remember reading about something M$ just turned on in Windows that the Chinese went nuts about because most versions of Windows in China are pirated.

everyone with a pirated copy of windows gets their desktop background turned black...i really dont see the problem since it doesnt do anything else.  Microsoft had wanted to do more, but the chinese government threatened them.
