Forums - Sales Discussion - So let me get this straight, Microsoft is chocking sony to death

Sony is getting beaten convincingly by the Nintendo Wii. So Microsoft is being competitive with Sony for second place and Microsoft delivers quality games to gamers on time. Last generation was boring there was no competition in the video game market, PS2 sold to 3 in 4 gamers of last generation.

"buisness"

It's actually spelled "business." Sorry, couldn't resist >.>

Its only because the hardware of the 360 is crap or else I wouldn't care about this stupid war.

The new ones are better dear + if you get an RROD you always have your PS3/Wii/DS/PSP to overcome the two/three weeks before you get your X360 back.

Which new ones? Nah, a) I'm broke and b) can't stand it when I'm in a huge game and the 360 goes zzzzzzz... *dead*. Although I'm stinking jealous about Fable II.

I used to have that opinion as well, but I have let my resistance go and bought one. Supposedly the new Jasper chipset has made the thing very reliable now.
I know you really want to play Star Ocean, and there are other good RPGs on the 360 as well, so you might want to check some technical sites to verify if the new 360 is indeed much better than the old one. Besides Japanese 360's are pretty cheap (not that the euro ones are very expensive anymore, the Pro is cheaper than a Wii).

And: in Holland you get €50/40/30 (elite/pro/arcade) back on your purchase in 2008, great deal.

No if I get one it'll be an European version. The newest versions are simply too expensive for me right now. Yes I want to play Star Ocean IV :(

"Microsoft simply did very well this gen, Sony didn't."

Well as I've pointed out before, this generation is far from over. And with Sony set to bring out better games than the competition in 2009 and beyond, Microsoft bringing out their next console in either late 2009 or 2010 at a high price point and possibly using a medium for its games that is either prohibitively expensive for or that the majority of gamers can't use effectively at this point in time (digital streaming) and the Wii 2 coming out in 2011, but as hinted at in early reports being no more powerful than either the 360 or PS3; then Sony still has a solid chance to win this generation.

No. Sony is long gone from getting anywhere close to #1 this generation.

You can't go 3-4 years into the generation and put out your blockbuster games and expect people to flock to your system (and even if the games were good, who's going to pay that rediculous price for them when theres a Wii and X360 for near half the price?). Nintendo tried that in 1998 with Ocarina of Time, and it didn't work. By that time, Playstation had every ounce of momentum and was running away like a gravy train on biscuit wheels.

How, pray tell, can a console come back from a 20 million unit deficit built in 2 years to beat another system? It's never happened, and it won't happen.

This I can assure you of: Even if 2009 is Sony's best year, Nintendo is going to add another 10 or 15 million units on that 20m lead, and Microsoft will fight for every inch to make that 5 million+ unit lead stay that way.

They didn't get cocky. They just got dumped by a lot of their fans that preferred a console that had one "great" game instead of Great games in all genres like the PS2. Well going on four years later, the 360 has managed to come up with two "great" games. So, if current trends continue, in the next gen Microsoft will have a console with three "great" games, but the video game market will truely be cheated out of all of the Great games in every genre that it used to have which were on Playstation consoles.

No. Sony got cocky. They made an overprieced boondoggle of a system that the average consumer just can't afford. How many Xbox 360's have been sold at the $400+ price point? How many Saturns? How many 3DO's? How many Neo Geos? It's just a price consumers won't afford.

And I don't get how you think the X360, at any given time, only had 1 "great" game. It's had many great games, and has always had a massive edge on the Playstation 3 in terms of it's gaming library - The Playstation 3 has 3-4 games that define itself against the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 has about 10-12. When the casual consumer looks at the prices, the libraries (and also the uniqueness of the Wii), there's very little reason to buy the Playstation 3.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

I think the Wii has proven that you don't need a single one of the first/third party IPs from Sony or Microsoft to absolutely rape the video game market.

What Microsoft is doing this generation is just good business, and certainly nothing less than Sony did to Nintendo when they first came in on the market.

Game dev takes longer now, and with Microsoft jumping in the ring early this generation AND providing excellent dev tools and documentation on an architecture that everyone already understands, it just made sense for companies to voluntarily develop their games for 360 as well.

Third parties are out for themselves, not Sony. Deal with it.

Darth, you are an intelligent Sony fan and I'm sorry if you feel as if you are getting lumped in with Leo-J. Leo-J has the biggest case of Sony Selective Memory Syndrome on this forum. Everything he complained about are things Sony did to get into the gaming industry. Either you disapprove of the tactics or you don't. You can't like it when one company does and bitch about with the next company follows suit.

MS is running the Sony playbook right now. Even their pricing strategy is Sony's. Sony bleed money from MS last gen by dropping the price of the PS2 when ever they had reduction in hardware cost. They knew that MS was losing money on every X-box sold. Either MS would have to lose market share or more money if they choose to match Sony. MS has been doing this tactic with the 360. Reducing their price with each hardware revision because it puts additional pressure on Sony.

As Darth has said its just business. Although he was talking about Gears fanboys vs. Resistance fanboys, Sessler's soapbox is something you may want to take a look at Leo-J. Sony's not paying you, so campaigning endlessly on their behalf is rather ridiculous. We need more gamers and less fanboys. I'm a gamer. If I were like you, I'd be turning my nose up at Valkyria Chronicles instead of alternating between it and Gears of War 2.

Someone on the boards wanted to refute what I said about being able to judge future trends from similar events that happened in the past (which is a doctrine taught in any college socio-history course) by using the success of the Nintendo Wii.

I would just like to say in response that it is not previously unheard of for Nintendo to have a great amount of success in the videogames industry.

My most anticipated games:  Whatever Hideo Kojima is going to do next, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake, Wii Sports Resort.  Cave Story Wiiware.
