Forums - General Discussion - 50 Reasons to Love the EU

Yeah, I like the EU. It's still far from beeing perfect, but it definately is a model for the future.

Regarding turkey, the problem with it isn't really the islam. It's not like it was some kind of islamistic country ( the goverment is secular). There are just standards that do not match ours yet. Letting any more countrys join whose infrastructure isn't good enough will only hurt the whole EU. Last but not least, turkey still doesn't recognize cyprus which is a EU member.

There are more points, but generally these 2 are the biggest ones.

O my god makes me sick, you have to be kidding me. The only reason why people did this is so they can get more power. Not only that but its an attack on every nations national soverignty.

Ill give you an example, You have a country like Latvia that will end up paying to clean the beaches in Britain. Not to mention half of your reasons are flawed.

They donate twice as much in foriegn aid? But that doesnt matter, the numebr would still be the same if they are not unionized.

I didn't write this list. Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but you seem to be buying into right-wing media far too much. Let me guess, Daily Mail? The Sun? Sky News? Come on, which is it.

90% chance that it's owned by Rupert Murdoch, who happens to be very anti-EU.

The status of Cyprus certainly is an issue. The main issue, as I posited in an earlier post, is the role of the Turkish military. The EU will not admit a state that possesses a military which constantly meddles in the nation's political affairs.

I'm pretty sure they Daily Mail isn't owned by Murdoch, but the Times is. But yes, that seems to be tje typical viewpoint of many a Brit, however, I'm happy the support for the SNP has decreased, because obviously Scotland can cope on it's own, when the Royal Bank of Scotland and the Halifax Bank of Scotland are bailed out by the Bank of England

Yeah, true. The goverment isn't very stable, the military  made several coups in the past.

Wanna bet that Erdogan will be pwned as well? :P

Well, the Constitutional Court did not ban the AKP and Erdogan because they have been instituting certain reforms-some of which are reforms requested by the EU. The Court, however, admitted that the AKP is the central location of anti-secular activities. Depending on how the AKP governs, I could see anything happening. Turkey is currently in an interesting situation.

In a more serious note, the EU is very much a needed institution. I'm glad it exists. I agree with pretty much all of the list.
