Forums - General Discussion - 50 Reasons to Love the EU

The EU is really great sadly if the population don't like something they always blame the EU for it.

26 Prospect of EU membership has forced modernisation on Turkey

Agree with the whole list but this one in particular. Turkey was so far behind the rest of europe in both an ethical and technological sense. Really pulled them into the 21st century.

Not to mention forcing thm to clean up the poor humanitarian policies Turkey had.

Are Turkey actually part of the EU, yet? I heard they're having trouble getting in because member states are worried about an Islamic nation holding too much power (Turkey's population = 120 million. Seats in the European Parliament are handed out depending on the size of your population).

Nah, but the EU are making them jump through hoops to get in lol. I don't see how Islam enters into it, governing systems should not include religion as a factor.

Well, that's just what my history teacher told me about. He probably dummed it down though, as he was supposed to be talking about the Weimar Republic and got side tracked. As all good and interesting teachers do.

i had a science teacher that used to get off topic like that...he usually ended up ranting about the US and how the war in afghanistan was all about oil.

i do love europe and i intend to visit you when i graduate, but am sure you would love Canada too, Maybe not the west part of it but surely Quebec

Canada's gone down in my estimation ever since they removed the union flag from their's.

Down with Canada, down with Canada!

I vote we (the Brits) invade Canada, and change the flag back ourselves.

EDIT: Fixed error. Apparantly, Britain never invaded Canada.

Yea i liked Canadas original flag, it was blue, it had union jack in the top left corner, and it had the emblem. Maple Leaf flag shows nothing about our history.

^I preferred the red flag, myself. (I think the colour was the only difference between them, there may have been others).

Yeah, as a British citizen sometimes I think my fellow countrymen should sit down and shut up, and stop complaining about "soveignty", I mean obviously the EU would be worse than Labour dragging us into 2 wars and creating a banking bubble that was our economy (!)

The EU is, in my opinion, more apprehensive about the Turkish military's role in the political system. The military has an inordinate amount of power in Turkish politics compared to the militaries of other liberal democracies. They have perpetrated a few coups in the past and threatened others with the potential of a coup. There is currently an investigation into an alleged coup that was to be perpetrated by the clandestine "Ergenekon" organization against Prime Minister Erdogan's government. This will be a most interesting case to follow.

O my god makes me sick, you have to be kidding me. The only reason why people did this is so they can get more power. Not only that but its an attack on every nations national soverignty.

Ill give you an example, You have a country like Latvia that will end up paying to clean the beaches in Britain. Not to mention half of your reasons are flawed.

They donate twice as much in foriegn aid? But that doesnt matter, the numebr would still be the same if they are not unionized.

VIVE LE QUEBEC LIBRE!!! free from the damn british

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Actually, it's more like the other way round, as UK people sometimes think that because a lot of British money is given to other countries and therefore hate it, though there's more to the EU than that.
