Forums - Sales Discussion - Finally: Microsoft drops the price of the X360 $50 usd

Useless cut.

They should have got rid of the core and dropped the premium to $300

I think that MS's games division is in a bit of a cash crunch right now, and $50 is really all that they can put towards a price cut.

With the PS3's sales in the mid 40's and the 360's sales in the mid 30's ( i think, without checking) that this smaller price cut will bring the 360's sales right up to what the PS3 has been selling at the last couple of weeks.

Why even bother with a $50 price cut?

This is too little, too late. MS should have cut the price by $100 last year if they really wanted to make some noise.

Consoles owned: Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PSP, DS, PS3

As others have said in other threads, they're likely waiting until the newer model to cut prices as it will be cheaper to make and hopefully have fixed at least the RRoD problem. This small cut is perhaps just a response to the bad press they've been getting lately. I know several people who would buy a 360 now if the problem was fixed. Obviously a lower price is always nice, but from most people I've heard from, it's not the biggest factor holding them back for now.

I would say it won't increase it 100% like the PS3 drop did. However, I think it could brig the X360 upto 50,000 units a week. This is GREAT news due to Madden, Stranglehold, Blue Dragon, Medal of Honor, and Bioshock coming out in the next 4-5 weeks.

A $50 pricedrop, although not what I wished for (I've been advocating a drop since Gears of War's launch last year), I believe there is an inerhant strategy:

Microsoft drops the price $50, and starts clearing out the ~1m remaining X360 consoles left unsold. By the time these consoles are sold (probably right after Halo3 launches, and sells through lots, and lots of units), the Falcon will be in production - saving MS more and more cash, and the more reliable system.

At that time, MS could easily decide to drop the price another $50 before Christmas to dominate the US market in Nov-Dec with a $199 core (as we've heard about).

Your point is very interesting and what you say could happen. Anyway I guess we'll never know if xbox pricedrop will affect sales as PS3's did, because while SCEA choosed to move hardware sales in a very slow moment, with only NCAA football as a significant seller, microsoft is gonna drop (?) it just before the beginning of a killer fall line-up that will boost sales whatever the price is.

That's why I can't see a second drop coming before the end of the year, it's not necessary. Christmas bundles with xbox 360+Halo/GTA4/Mass Effect will do great anyway. In my opinion, even if not as much as Nintendo, Microsoft is on the driving seat right now and other pricedrops won't happen in 2007, unless sony drops to 399$.

I dont see a secomd price cut this year, even though I wish it would.

The only reason it might happen is maybe this cut is temporary, then they do another $50 when Falcon becomes full operational and is on store shelves en masse.

Anyway, this should put it back ahead of PS3 easily.

Take it as you will but the Xbox 360 has been 349 euro's rather than the usual 399 over here (here being The Netherlands) for at least a month now.

You can get an Xbox 360 with Forza 2 for 399 euros. Which is a nice deal. Not that I need it, got one allready :)

Dont underestimate the ps3. Sony might drop the price sometime in march since they always drop the price in march. I doubt 360 will get ahead any time soon.

Why not $100? Damn you Microsoft. I'm trying to go Wii60 and you aren't making it easy! Oh well, guess I'll take what I can get and buy one anyway.

PSWii is better =p    you just want the wii listed first, huh?  JFWY

good news for MS, I'm not getting one, but I'm glad for other gamers.

The "falcon" better be alot more reliable. I would seriously freak out if I didn't have my PS3 for a few weeks, I don't think I could handle that.

I'll be curious to see the sales impact.

BTW, All you whiners claiming that the PS3 price cut was just a "CLEARANCE", then what is this? Aren't they clearing out current models so that they can release the Falcon model? Or is this different because it's NOT Sony?

It's a bit different than that. I haven't heard anything about MS stopping production of Cores, Premiums, or Elites, whereas Sony has stated once 60gb stock is depleted, it's gone. Also, this will make the cheapest 360 the same price as the Wii. A brand new 360 has never officially been offered for lower than 299.
