Im still really new to JRPG and this one looks fun. So even the most generic gameplay and story might seem awesome to me.XD Honestly it looks great I could care less about the review but this is for all who do.

Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World Review

The New World is a lot like the old one.

November 10, 2008 - The long-running "Tales" series of Japanese role-playing games (JRPG) has a rabid fanbase – but for newcomers to the series, it's hard to see why. Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World is a run of the mill, standard JRPG without a single original idea in its head. Sullen country boy with a bad haircut destined to save the world? Check. An awkwardly translated, incomprehensible story? Check. Monster hunting? Check. This entire package -- from the story to the gameplay to the visuals -- feels like a relic we should have grown out of by now.

Dawn of the New World is set two years after the GameCube game and features several returning characters. Fans of the first game will probably enjoy returning to this world and seeing their old friends. The story is some garbledygook about the world falling into ruin and this spineless little coward named Emil is somehow the only one who can set things right. There are way too many arduous titles and concepts here. Players are supposed to keep track of things like the Chosen of Regeneration, a Blood Purge, a Great Tree, the Giant Kharlan Tree, a new World Tree… It's all just fancy window dressing for what is really a mundane adventure. A few high-minded concepts are proposed, like the confusion between what is right and what is wrong, but they aren't used effectively. While the script is not that interesting to begin with, it's also been clumsily translated so that dialogue often just barely makes sense. What is this, amateur hour? It's possible that, in many of these instances, there simply isn't an easy translation from the original Japanese. But that doesn't make it any easier to sit through.

The real-time battles are one of the highlights of Dawn of the New World.

IGN Ratings for Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World (Wii)

Rating Description
out of 10 click here for ratings guide
6.5 Presentation
The menus and overworld map look great, but the original Japanese suffers greatly in its translation to English, making most of the story and dialogue a big mess.
7.0 Graphics
Again, the menus and maps are presented really well, but the in-game graphics are nothing we didn't see on the GameCube. Some of the character animations are good.
5.5 Sound
The original Japanese voice track probably would have been easier to listen to, as the English translation hardly makes sense, anyway. At best, the music is forgettable -- at worst, it's aggravating.
6.5 Gameplay
The real-time battles can be fun, but everything else from the linear quests to the monster hunting feels dated. Haven't we played this game, oh, 100 times before?
7.0 Lasting Appeal
Dawn of the New World is a very long adventure, and there are some extras waiting for you once you've completed it.
6.7
Passable

Well I didn't expect it to get great reviews but at least a 7-8 haha. Oh well not like I wasn't going to get it. All I needed was another Tales game. People keep saying oh just get ToV it's better, but I don't think so haha and I'm going to be stubborn about it.

I really liked the first. I anticipated this game being crap once I saw a trailer where multiple animals are in your party and there are multiple Lloyds. Still, I vowed I would buy a sequal if it ever came, so I guess I will :P

But I do find it kind of silly, hypocritical, and disturbing that they dont mind attacking this game for having tired gameplay but they allow all those shooters and other RPGs to have such with good scores? Hmm now if that isn't justice then I don't know what isn't.

Youve got a 360?

Oh, well. I hope the Call of duty review is better. If not, I'll just buy World of Goo, Shining force II, and Sin & Punishment. Maybe I should get De Blob instead...Hmmm

I was so hyped for this game. I may still buy it, but if more reviews are like this, then I won't. I don't care if Wii lacks RPGs right now; there is no way I'm spending my money on avereage to mediocre games.

Add me for Pokemon, New Leaf, and Fire Emblem, Mario Kart 8.

That's one less game I have to buy.

Well it is Tales for something.

Well at least you thought it was gonna be bad before review. Dunno if you actually go buy them

@Zucas
Lol at your 2nd post. What are you gonna do? Americans love them some shooter and RPG fans love SE. You can almost always expect a good review for any these games if their is hyped built up for them.
