Forums - Website Topics - Vgchartz has a bad rep

Hey guys, occasionly i venture onto the N4G.com website and i find it funny how whenever a news story is posted from vgchartz, people say it can't be trusted.

Theres a news story on there now about Gears 2 sales and it has a few people saying "remember it's vgchartz".

Why all the hate?

It's as if some people can't believe the 360 can outsell the ps3 even when there is hard evidence!

I think it's mostly fanboys, i remember a few attacking this sites forums from n4g but it seems whatever numbers vgchartz has some people just think it's biased!

Funny to read their reactions though.

Pretty much, on "neutral" sites, the fanboys of the other two systems usually detract from highly positive sales of a game on the other console by trying to make it seem like it really can't be trusted.

n4g suck

it's something we're just going to have to accept, Vgchartz isn't really official in any sense of the word but when people actualy scrutinise the sales data they'll find it's either spot on or within a small margin of error most of the time.

Obviously it can't track every game with extreme precision but it's alot better than guessing.

its not only n4g. on digg to they put vgchartz as unreliable.

I'll say it's both of what Million and habfan said. People might not want Gears 2 sales to be so huge and since VG chartz isn't a huge business they don't count it as official.

Still vgchartz is now being compared to NPD in that people say "o thats vgchartz, I'll just wait for NPD data", now that is a good improvement for vgchartz. For so many people to know about vgchartz and being compared to NPD, if that continues vgcharts will just become more and more popular (popularity could have a bad and good rep). It will also question NPD data, they are just guessing also and have clearly stated they don't include huge retailers like Wal-Mart and I think toys r us.

N4G is a terrible source of information.

love vgchartz...anyway...the numbers aren't always so close...but they are almost every time close enough...the games who sell a million on vgchartz sold well IRL to so if its like 100 000 + / - it doesn't really matter much...

You know how sports fan only ever bother to boo players that are big or relatively important? Kinda the same thing here. Vgchartz has begun making a name for itself and is being cited pretty frequently. When something or someone gets big, there is always a group who will attack them. No big site has a perfect rep, gamespot, gametrailers, even IGN, all get attacked. And Vgchartz has probably gotten more accurate over time. Hating can sometimes be a sort of compliment.

It's about fanboys, but not in the way you're thinking: it's about websites, not consoles.

I wasn't really around for the original founding of the site, so I can't give you many details; I'll leave that to the longtime members. But as I understand the situation, there was a lot of sour-grapes whining when this site split away from NeoGAF. That site had a general (and completely unfounded) distrust of the statistical methods used by this site, and they got very envious of VGChartz's success over their own laughably-bad nexgenwars.com listing (which only uses the numbers from NPD and such, then tries to extrapolate from there on a second-by-second basis).

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.
