Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 vs 360 sales for 2008.... NO IT'S NOT A FANBOY THREAD!

The only console doing any pwning is the Wii, selling as much as both the 360 and PS3 combined.

That aside, overall this year i suspect it'll be a dead tie between the 360 and PS3. That's actually a bad sign for the 360 given it's half the price of the PS3 (depending on what models/bundles you compare). It's a shame there's no way to cmpare like for like, i.e. the Elite model 360 sales to the same priced PS3 model sales....

I am largely platform agnostic. I fail to understand why some people get overly fanboyish about what is an inanimate piece of electronics that's obsolete even before it's launched, when there are far more important things to champion, such as preventing environmental destruction or preventing millions of people dying unnecessarily from illnesses. This fact however, doesn’t mean I am not someone who doesn’t enjoy gaming as a pastime (as I have done for the last 20 years) or doesn’t have a strong interest in how the market is evolving – hence my presence on this site.

Platforms owned – PC, DS, X-Box 360, PS3, PSP and Wii.

Wow.

PS3 is pwning 360 this year. Got about 1.2 mln units for 360 to make up on PS3.

It's a shame that Squilliam is only using Q3/Q4 2008 sales for his sig, and not full year sales.

That's great news for Squilliam, actually. 1.2mln units is pwning the 360? Since it's looking like it'll be about a tie this holiday, it'll take 5 years of PS3 pwning for it to actually catch up

dont worry next year after another price cut, the ps3 will be pwning the 360 by 1.2 million per month. even 1.2 million from this year is pwning, considering the 360 has ALWAYS been cheaper than ps3. why does everyone forget that.

 Still, MS is profitable, Sony is not. You forgot that the PS3 lost 400 million USD in the last three months?

err...sony did make a profit. just ~70% less of one than they thought they would

talking about gaming divisions of course.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

@hyruken

what numbers is DJ spinning?

you call him a fanboy to his face for saying that the PS3 is pwning this year?

for him sharing his opinion and saying the word pwn... you aren't paying attention to context.

and no, there are several hundred local PS3 fanboys around here, the rest are Nintendo, and there are a handful of Microsoft fanboys, (probably 5 or so)

keep that in mind when you accuse people of "spinning numbers"

Which Platform do you game the most on?

Wii - 24%

X360 - 24%

Ps3 - 37%

I'm betting that you're pretty dang biased here, as you agree with the X360/Ps3 owners, and disagree with the Wii owners. This makes you feel there are more Wii owners than there really are.

No it is not. I'm sure MS is making more money with less console :

- Install base is older

- XBLA is generating massive amounts of revenues/

- More games have been sold

- A (big ?) part of the install base of Sony is pushed by BR, not gaming

We haven't seen the effect of the price cut policiy for XMAS yet ...

In 2007, the PS3 outsold the 360 by 1.55 million to retail, of which about 600K the holiday season.

For 2008 the PS3 outsold the 360 1.51 million to retail until September 2008 so far.

It should however also be noted that the PS3 is yet to launch in some regions like for South America and is selling at a much higher entry pricing.

Similarly, taking equal timeframes the PS3 sold 16.84 million units until the 1st of September 2008, the 360 sold 13.8 million in an equal timeframe. So the PS3 outsold the 360 to retail worldwide by 3.04 million units.

This despite a ~5 months delay for the PS3's best performing market, Europe.

Can I refer all posters to the Web site front page..... its all that counts and matters really.  Either side can spin all they want but it doesnt change the cold hard facts.

If you refer to the numbers on the frontpage, we all know they are regularly corrected estimates. So not solid facts from any perspective and just the figures don't go into as much depth considering launch windows and such. If just looking at those figures, not understanding the 360 had 1 year or more of a headstart on the market for all regions (or for instance additional hardware sales due to RRoD issues, people owning backup units), one could think the 360 sold better than the PS3, which is of course not the case.

The only solid facts come from financial reports.

you guys dont get it, do you.. 95% of the games are multiplatform and those 95% are running better on the Xbox360. RS2 has bullshit graphics even though its ps3 exclusive and a high budget title.. if you dont believe me play it on a >50 1080p TV and compare it with any 360 shooter. rs2 is the PIXELSHIT.. it seems to have no aa at all.. LBP? sorry but this is not my type of game.. Killzone2? okey this one looks really great, but there were millions spent for it to look great.. you can do a lot with so much money, even do a wii game with awesome graphics.. still killzone is a ps3 +.
now back to my point, why are there so much fools who pays 2x more to get a ps3 instead of buying a 360 where 95% of the games runns and plays better.. even the controller is better! ps3 controller is the same since ps1, sure it was great back then, but the time goes on you know...
after 2 years the xbox has still the graphical lead over the ps3... the cell-cpu wont help the ps3 in any way, cause the cpu is not that much important for gaming.. on the other side its restricted by the ram and gpu... even crysis dont need any high ghz cpu, what it needs is ram and a worthy gpu in which the 360 is both superior to the ps3.. sony is talking about only using 50% of ps3? lol, they are maybe using 50% of the cpu because the games dont and wont need more.. and btw the 360 architecture is also more effizient than the one of the ps3..

even 1 of my best friends who owned a 360, sold his 360, got a ps3 because he is a long-lived sony-fanboy and after i went to his house with my xbox we compared so many games and how they played on each console and he was like WTF!!! he will sell his ps3 now and buy him a 360 again... he is so pissed, he really believed in sony and payed even 700€ for his ps3 (he bought it on release) and this is what he got...

-->graphics were better on 360
-->online was better on 360
-->controller was better on 360, especially for shooters and even my sony-fanboy friend admitted it (you slip alot on the ps3 controller sticks)

so why the hell do you people even buy such a overhyped, overexpensive console anyway? cause of 1 game being compareable to gears?(killzone2) i think its cause you couldnt suppress your sony-fanboy instincts but thats just me...

@ kowenicki

Sold "better" or sold more.... which stat will count at the start of the next gen?.. the latter I would say.

Of the currently sold consoles, the PS2 sold by far the most. It even outsold the PS3 and 360 last quarter. It still sold 28 million units worldwide the last 2 fully reported on fiscal years, way more than the 360 sold currently within almost 3 years.

I think the PS3 will probably be around long after a 360 and Wii successor launch. The install base 360 vs PS3 percentage gap decreased these last 2 years.

The 360 of course started at 100% vs 0% before November 2006.
By January 2007, it was at 86% for the 360 and 14% for the PS3.
By September 2007 it was 70% for the 360 vs 30% for the PS3.
By January 2008, it was 63% for the 360 vs 37% for the PS3.
Now for September 2008, it is 57% for the 360 vs 43% for the PS3.

At the end of the year both platforms will be about on par percentage wise. The main advantages the 360 got from its huge headstarts and lower entry pricing are getting marginal.

For obvious reasons the upcoming years will look less rosy for the 360, 3rd party developers will be pushed to spend more effort on their PS3 versions. All major XBox games already saw sequels on the 360 (pushing people to upgrade their discontinued XBox) and there's not much room left for price cuts the upcoming years.
