Forums - Gaming Discussion - The PS3 is not the PS2

Kwaad said: Darc Requiem said: Erik is right. People keep touting the 10 year life span for the PS3. If Sony is in third place this gen, the PS3 will not have a 10 year life span. If its in Second place it most likely won't either. The first place system almost always has an extended life span. Third party developers have a hard time leaving behind the industry's largest userbase. Honestly I don't see any of the three current gen consoles having a 10 year life span at this point. The 360 will probably have a 6 or 7 year life span. The Wii* and PS3 will most likely have a 5 year lifespan. *I don't see the Wii going beyond 5 years unless it absolutely dominates the market in a NES/PS1/PS2/GB/GBA/DS type fashion. Why do you think the 360 will have that long of a life? their already scrapping it. And launching a new model. It's been 15 months. You think it can go another 60?
that's pretty funny... The only thing being scrapped is the PS3's BC. Not only is Sony releasing a newer model PS3, but it's actually worse then the original. I think thats a first in console history...

Hmm they aren't scrapping it right? Is they not just doing a redesign like PSTwo? 6 years of life span is actuly not that much, say 5 years totaly untill xbox720 comes out then thired party and some first party titles one year. For me I think all manufactures need to have some new models five years from now, simple rule that if one get a new system out of the door everybody else will follow.

I actually expect that both Microsoft and Nintendo are aware that you can inflate your sales numbers by producing a better version of the exact same console every couple of years; think GBA->GBA SP->Gameboy Micro. Many people will buy the new version and either give their old system to a family member/friend or trade it in/sell it (which provides an inexpensive alternative) ...

What nonsense are you babbling about this time Kwaad? New model? The chipset will be the same, it will play the same games. The "new model" of the 360 will be no different than revisions Sony made to the PS1/PS2 and that Nintendo has made to its portable systems. A hardware revision doesn't qualify as an all new system Kwaad. I know you like to reach at straws to defend Sony but could you try not to be so transparent? Staticneuron defends Sony all the time, but the difference between you and him Kwaad is that Static makes excellent points.
