There are quite a few interesting things to point out from this article. Firstly, the previous generation equipment gets more playtime than the current gen equipment for all consoles. The Xboxhas more thandouble the 360's lineup, and even the Gamecube is outranking the Wii when it comes to usage (although that will probably change soon). Looks like the huge number of games available for these older platforms

As well as this, the Wii's gaming sessions are shorter than all the other consoles (except Gamecube), which is not really a huge shock, but I was surprised that it was only just behing the Xbox360, and Other (which I can only assume is PC, unless it's counting handhelds as well). The PS3 is by far the console with the longest play sessions.

But by far the biggest shock (for some, at least), is this line: "Finally, Metrics reports that Wii households are upscale, with annual income more likely to be more than $100,000 income." So much for the Wii only going to people who can't afford the PS3...

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

First things first...PS2 and Xbox has a huge install base over the Wii, 360, PS3...so i can expect those systems to kiss the throne of the last generation...the xbox 360 will only be successful if it can dominate the original xbox in sales..25 million worldwide...lets see if microsoft can...does anyone think PS3 can?? IMO Hell no...O_O

I would think Wii should be above gamecube since you can play gamecube games on the wii, but the GC has sold more than the Wii for now.

Bet with OriGin: Within 1 year Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be ahead of Mario Kart Wii (when aligning the one whole year from each region). 2 week ban from Vgchartz for the loser. Edit: Darn! Looks like OriGin will win.

Your title is sort of misleading. The PS2 has sold by far the highest amount of units of any of the consoles there, and the PS3 the least.

As for the fact that the Wii is mostly bought by households with incomes of $100,000+, well, damn, if two people can't make at least 100k combined they must have some crappy jobs. I think it only serves to prove that the Wii is mostly bought by kids, who still live with their parents.

Come on, I know you guys can read charts. PS3 play sessions are HIGHER than any other system. So PS3 players enjoy their consoles more than any other players. Hey we can spin anything  =p
Do you really expect the console with the least sold would take up more of the total play time then any other system?
83 mins/session x 1.88 sessions/day = 156.04 mins a day = PS3
BTW, this thread was already done once today.
http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/07/26/ps3-owners-spend-more-time-with-the-console-than-any-other/
Nielsen just released their monthly GamePlay Metrics report, and it showed that PS3 owners use their consoles much longer than any other systems. The average session with a PS3 was 83 minutes in the month of June. In comparison, the average Xbox 360 session lasted 61 minutes, and the average Wii session lasted only 57 minutes. Could super-long Super Stardust HD play sessions be responsible for PS3's unusually long play time?

How did Nielsen get these numbers? According to their press release, "Nielsen GamePlay Metrics uses console data collected from the Nielsen's People Meter TV sample combined with Nielsen GamePlay Metrics' proprietary audio signature library that matches the unique audio signature of every game tracked on the six most widely available video game consoles, including PlayStation 2, PLAYSTATION 3, Xbox, Xbox 360, Wii and GameCube. The GamePlay Metrics user sample includes more than 12,000 households with approximately 33,000 individuals."

Although PS3 owners reported played the longest average sessions, they still account for only 1.5% of the total gameplay minutes played last month. The PS2 is still the most played console, accounting for more than 42% of total gameplay time.

How is that at all a logical assumption?  There is no evidence to support that statement at all.  I agree that most kids 13 and under would own a Wii as opposed to a PS3 or 360, but most kids 14-17 own a PS3 or 360.  In fact, this is their primary and dominant demographic.

I love how you spin it to say PS3 is played the least when its actually played the most of the 3 new systems. But whatever, this chart clearly shows more people playing PS2/PS3 than any other system. The install base of the PS3 is so low right now. Also, the data that says people with higher incomes buy the Wii makes some sense if you take into account the stereotype that most higher class people are cheap, or very conservative with their money. Makes perfect sense to me.

Also I would like to post some status currently regarding the console wars in America:

When Xbox 360 launched: 651,336 Yearly 2005 America-WOW for $400
When PS3 launched: 746,653 Yearly 2006 America-NO this crazy freaking $600!!

And during the year 2006 of course the Xbox 360 thrashed the PS3 primarily the Xbox 360 had the lead selling a whopping 4,431,927 units in America

Current State Wars in America 2007:
Xbox 360: 1,483,916 (+)
PS3: 946,046 (+)

Now this year for the battle between these two consoles have been close as the Xbox 360 is selling better...the PS3 is selling extremely well considering its price of $600...and the most recent cut to $500...congrats to Sony...sorry about Nintendo..their in a totally different world...They currently are thrashing the market right now..Now..now I'm not being biased on no system..I'm just stating some things I was currently looking at.
