Forums - Gaming Discussion - IGN Prefers Analog Snowboarding to Balance Board; Shaun White PS360 vs Wii

IGN has run a feature, comparing the PS3/360 version of the upcoming Shaun White snowboarding game against the Wii version (available here: http://wii.ign.com/articles/927/927089p1.html).

They find that the PS3/360 version is superior in every way to the Wii version, except for "Presentation/Visuals," which they pronounce a tie, presumably to be ironic. For "Genre Innovations," they apparently do not count using your balance and weight to control the game an "innovation," instead rewarding the PS3/360 version for giving you the ability to ride in a chairlift, because it "ground[s] the game in real life snowboarding...."

Regarding "Controls/Feel," they choose the PS3/360 version there too, citing that "anyone who has played a snowboarding game before will be able to jump right in." I find it funny, when discussing a balance meter aspect to the PS3/360 controls, that they say "this is really all about realism." But... isn't the Wii Balance Board more realistically able to capture balance? But no, Balance Board controls actually seem to take away from a snowboarding game, because "control definitely isn't as snappy as it is with an analogue stick...."

I'd guess that, for most gamers, control would be even less "snappy" with an honest-to-god snowboard.

Doesn't snowboarding simulation eventually have to move away from thumbs and towards body control? How would the IGN editors propose that happen? What do they think should be the first step, if it's not on the Wii?

I'm not saying they're wrong, exactly -- having never played either version, I have no way of knowing. But based on their review, it really seems like the established gaming community and myself are approaching this generation with completely different mindsets. They are the old guard, who would now and (presumably) forever prefer to snowboard on their thumbs.
