I think there are two main reasons people play video games.

One is to do something fun. To pass the time with an enjoyable activity. Including, wanting to do something fun with friends and family.

The other, is to escape reality. To immerse yourself into another world.

I like both myself. For just fun and enjoyable gaming, I mainly like Nintendo consoles and games. To escape reality and immerse myself into another world, life, reality, I more enjoy my Xbox 360.

So, I think it all depends on the person and their preference. From a buisness persective, I do believe Nintendo was the smartest. I think most consumers out there look to a console for simply some fun and entertainment, rather than how realistic a gaming experience they can get.

From a personal perspective, I find the two views just as important. There are games on the 360 I could never enjoy near as much if it was made for the Wii with less hardware intense programming. And vise versa, there are games on the Wii that could only be on the Wii.

anyone else notice that vizion(who's name is far to close to mine) didn't even respond ONCE to his own thread? such flame bait, i might wager that LB started this with a different acct in order not to be called out for flaming. this isn't even productive, my whole post was that our values in gaming are different but LB, you twisted it into something else.

I was not saying that PS3 owner's buy them for the graphics only! My post was CLEARLY a sarcastic reply to ps3owners post- my actual post had ps3owners commend quoted, you left out ps3owner's portion of the post, which I was replying to. You also deleted the part of the post where I said I was being sarcastic! Why?!? It's just...pointless... to edit someone's post and then reply to what they weren't saying in the first place.

Seriously, don't edit people's posts so you can make the point you want to make. Trying to make my post look serious, when it was CLEARLY sarcasm, and then replying with your own sarcasm is friggin...searching for word that won't get me banned...asinine.

Sorry, no offense meant. Even without quoting the end your post, I though it was still obvious you were not being serious when you mention the PS3 and 360 outselling the wii, so your original sarcasm was still clear to anyone likely to read it on this site.  I would have cut more out of your original text if I was really attempting to make you look serious.   ;)

I still think my comment goes well in support of your comment, continuing on the same line, sarcastic or not.  Sorry you didn't appreciate the humor in my post, or are you just jealous you didn't see the connection yourself and mention blu-ray in your post? ;)

Well "Plays Like" is a difficult term to deal with because depending on how ridgid you want to get with your definition determines whether this condition can be met.

On the N64 Get Force Gemini was a third person shooter but it is more related to Ratchet and Clank than Gears of War; the same can be said of MDK and Metal Arms.

Brute Force for the XBox was heavily hyped as being a Squad Based Third Person Shooter although but I never played it so I can't comment on whether it played like Gears of War.

Battalion Wars did 3rd person shooting in a way not too different from Gears long before it came out.  BW is about halfway between Gears and Ratchet and Clank, though of course there is a lot more strategy in it than either of them (as it's really a tactics game).

I think graphics should play a secondary role to game play but it's definitely a must,. I remember when the N64 came out and I saw Mario 64 for it, the first thing a said was I want that and i can't believe the graphics........... of course the game play played a major role but graphics were still very present........

Yeah, I pretty much discounted Battalion Wars immediately ...

Even though Battlefield real-time strategy has been done before (Battlezone II), the combination of shooter elements and Pikmin-esq RTS elements makes Battalion wars play quite a bit differently than any other game.

The reality is there are dozens of third person shooters that could be directly compared to Gears of War, but unlike most FPS the Third Person Shooter genre is usually designed to be more distinct in some way. I think what ckmlb was trying to get at was that Gears of War was designed to be a far more visceral (in the Soldier of Fortune sense of the term) third person shooter than any that have come before it ...
