Forums - Gaming Discussion - The potential reason why the Wii might surpass PS2 sales numbers of 100 million

Kwaad, you say you can only name 5 good games for GC, but that's your opinion. That doesn't hold any merit. I have 10+ games and I think there all worth playing, but you may not like a Mario Kart game as much as I do, so that doesn't matter. DS has good games and will continue to. I've never been big on handhelds. My gbc=2 games, gba sp=5+ games, and my DS=3 and going to get some square enix games. You forget that DS is only a handheld and shouldn't be held in the same standards as consoles, regardless of how good it's selling. So even if DS starts to fail, which I don't think will happen anytime soon, Wii is a console. Wii will have more compelling games than DS, so don't try to pretend there market sales share the same fate.

I see. By this logic PS3 is already over since people are already tired of the PSP.

I just want to say my first Nintendo game I loved. Was duck hunt. I got it when it was new. If people dont tire of the DS it will be the first console in all history to acquire that. I can see it now. 2312: yeah, I hate my PS55. I like my good-ol. 307 year old DS! EDIT: Really? people are tired of the PSP? it hasnt lost market share against the DS really. As a rule of thumb, that is a major success when trying to knock someone down off 100% market share.

The Wii has the same 'type' of games. I'm saying when people tire of that type of game on their hand-helds. Chances are. They will be tired of the same thing. Rember. the Wii is a glorified DS. Holy crap. I never thought of that. ROFL. GC+DS=Wii Pointer is kinda like the touch screen. And used the exact same way in games. The power is a little more than the GC. The motion sensor sucks, but the tilt chip is awosome. Seriously. it sounds like a DS+GC. I never thought of that. EG: When I'm tired of Brain Training on my DS. Chances are. I'll be tired of it on my Wii. When I'm tired of picking up Puppy poo on my DS... Chances are. Why would I want to do it on the Wii?

Again your comparing what should not be compared. Wii is not GC+DS. When you get tired of picking up poop on your DS (which is an amazing feat to make fun, purely genius), you can play a game like SSX Blur or Mario. Those are games you can't do the same on DS. Also no one said there was a Brain game for Wii.

I don't know what you're trying to say. You make it sound like the Wii is going away soon along with the DS. Then you say people will eventually will tire of the DS, which I will agree with, but not within the next few years. By 2312, you will probably have a handheld with four screens and a fragrance emitter so you can smell where that dog shit is that you like to pick up so much. I don't think the PSP is over either nor the PS3, but I just I have a feeling you want Nintendo to be gone.

Just as a note on Wii vs. Gamecube sales ... In 3 months in Japan the Wii has sold more systems than the Gamecube did in a year Edit: Oops In north America the Wii has sold more systems than the Gamecube did in 6 months Over the next 3 months, if demand continues the Wii will have sold more than the Gamecube did in a year everywhere; and it is likely the Wii will have broken the 2 year mark of the Gamecube in Japan. Essentially, the Wii is selling at the rate of the PS2 ... I leave it as an excercise for the reader to compare the sales of the PS3 to those of the Gamecube and Dreamcast

Um, what? People have only "tired" of consoles (ie, stopped buying them in bulk), when support has dropped on them in favor of newer systems. Systems like NES, PS1, GB, etc., have maintained spectacular sales for 8 and 9 years, a feat that PS2 will now repeat. DS has only been out for just over 2 years, and looks on track to capture 2/3rd of the handheld market. Unless Nintendo releases a new handheld in the next 3 years, I don't see why DS won't maintain great sales for another FIVE YEARS. Plenty of time for Wii to come into its own... If people aren't tired of the PSP yet, they will be soon, as the massive sales lead of DS will mean it gets the bulk of software. PSP sales are actually fairly impressive, but when you get behind, there is an inevitable shift in support which makes you get WAY behind.
EG: When I'm tired of Brain Training on my DS. Chances are. I'll be tired of it on my Wii. When I'm tired of picking up Puppy poo on my DS... Chances are. Why would I want to do it on the Wii?
There's nothing like Wii Sports on DS, buddy.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

That's what I'm saying. the DS is so far off in lala land. The PSP is able to carry that 1/3rd market share. Sony might not be makeing a killer profit. But 1/3rd market share is a good portion, and if I was makeing a game. I would sure think about 1/3rd market share, especially when I can give out demos to try my games, have online play, downloadable content. Among other things. I think I would make 2 games for the DS, and 1 for the PSP. However if I'm not mistaken, 3rd party sales on the DS are no-where near as high as nintendo sales on the DS. Nintendo has learned they can make every game for a system, the system will sell, and people will buy everyone one of their games even though their not that great. However sony's approach is, have everyone make games on their system. And looking at sales numbesr. I'd have to say it reflects sales numbers. Look at the Wii in Japan. Why have 520,000 3rd party games sold TOTAL, while there are ALOT more, and ALOT BETTER 3rd party games for the Wii right now than the PS3... As well as the fact there are well over 2x the number of Wii's in japan right now. How come the PS3 has 480,000 3rd party games sold? why is there such a little diffrence. The PS3 has crap 1st party and crap 3rd party games in japan right now. The Wii has a few good 3rd party games, and a few fun 1st party games. Why have there been over 2million 1st party games sold for the Wii and under 550,000 3rd party? Why is there that gap. If we move over to the PS3. There have been less than 800,000 units sold, and about 480,000 3rd party games sold. Looking at these numbers And the fact the 3rd party games on the PS3 are crap. Why are they selling so damn well? That is saying something about market demographics. I am trying to say it is these market demographics that are why the Wii will fail. The Wii is riding on Nintendo's software right now, as the DS is. However the Nintendo software has slowed on the DS, and infact. I dont like most of it. So I'm selling a DS for LocoRoco and possibly killzone. I would rather have 2 PSP than 2 DS, as the PSP games have better multiplayer. Did I mention demos? Did I mention MULTIPLAYER demos? That you can download to your memory card... and play ANYWHERE you are? and not just in a store. Infact did you know some stores will try to kick you out when you whip out your DS infront of the DS display trying to download a damn demo? That's not fun either. My wife and I both agree Nintendo has screwed us (for our taste in games) Multiple times. We both love the PS2, and we are oogling at the PSP so far. I have 4 hours of shows on my PSP. I have spent nothing on my PSP after buying it. I have like 10 demos. To watch videos on the DS, you have to buy stuff, as well as a memory card. To play demos on the DS you have to go to a demo station, wich is a pain in the ass. Why cant you download it to the DS? Put it on a memory card? It's little things like that that make me enjoy sony products. Infact. I love sony cellphones too. Now that's just becuase their well made.

First party software sells for Nintendo because it's good. DS demos are being dowloaded when you play a multiplayer game with your friend who doesn't even have the cartridge of the game your playing. Great DEMOS are not a significant enough reason for purchase (Not bashing PSP, just saying that it is not a good argument). Again you say you don't like most of the software, that doesn't mean everyone else is the same. More people would be in disagreement with you. You may say the games are slowing down, while others may feel it's speeding up. The truth is sales are still record breaking, but you make it sound like everything is about to crash. I would also like to note that 3rd party support is considerably higher for Nintendo than it has been in recent years, and it's only going to get better.
