Forums - Gaming Discussion - The potential reason why the Wii might surpass PS2 sales numbers of 100 million

http://kotaku.com/gaming/kotaku-magu/kotaku-magu-teen-vogues-wii-we-oui-239523.php A gaming console on a superficial magazine, who would've thought? Nintendo is now actively targeting the whole of humanity with the Wii while the 360 and the PS3 is stuck marketing to just one half of it. There is a great chance that women will decide this generation 's console, me thinks, the same way they decided the current handheld war.

Not to be too negative, but I don't think anyone will break the 100 million mark mainly because I don't think any of the systems are as poorly built as the PS2 was ... From what I saw, if you got 24 months out of a PS2 system you were doing pretty good, and few PS2s lasted longer than 36 months; what this means is that many people ended up buying 2 or 3 PS2s which inflates the number of systems sold.

Interesting... I actually think that Wii does stand a chance of doing crazy numbers like that. It amazes me how well the console is selling already - mostly off the back of Zelda, Wii Sports and Wii Play. The 10 million mark will come comfortably before the end of the year - with many huge titles still to come. At the moment, the hardware is selling itself - which is a good sign.

Three things. 1. I have a launch PS2. It has been used thought off of that. Never needed serviced. 2. Look at how the N64 and GC sold for their first 6 months. 3. Look at how the N64 and GC sold AFTER their first 6 months. 4. Why did I put a 4?

If you noticed with GC, not many good games came out after launch. They released some good stuff for launch and then had nothing for a long while. Wii had one or two great launch games and the rest are more evenly spread out. Wii has their games being sold over a better time range. This should help keep the sales going. Instead of beating 6 good games and waiting a year for the next one, you beat a good one every 2-3 months and have enough games to keep you content throughout the year.

Why dont you compare it to the N64 then? It had... hands down. Nintendos best. The N64 was marketed to adults. The N64 had adult orientated games. (conquers bad fur day comes to mind... even the x-box port was watered down because it was so... adult orientated) I *loved* my N64. I didnt really want a PS untill 3 or 4 years after it's launch, and the N64 entered a lull in games. The GC sucked for games... I can only think of like 5 games for the GC worth buying. At least the X-Box I can name off 10. The DS is going abstract. And not the abstract I like. Like. Not... games... games. Let's make picking up dog crap fun! Uhh... I dont care how desperate I am. I will not enjoy clicking on a pile of dog crap. I know! Maybe I'll enjoy giveing the dog a bath. Or hell, Maybe I'll enjoy playing fetch with it. Oh wait. If I want to give a dog a bath. I can. I can do 2 at a time!!! Cant do that in the game! I can even give cats baths. And ferrets! I have to pick up crap all day. it is NOT fun. It is NOT enjoyable. I dont want to do it in a game. Bill Payer. Would be a fun game too! It's a game where you are given so much money a month. and you have to not spend it on stuff. Like food! To pay the bills! My point is. The Wii is following the DS. I like the GBA MUCH better than the DS. Infact, there's more GBA games coming out that I want, than DS. And a GBA SP feels alot better in my hands than a DS. :) Nintendo is selling the Wii on the grace of the DS. When people tire of the DS, the Wii will be over.

alright let's compare their first 3 months in America 1 N64 Sep 96 339,000 339,000 Wii Nov 06 538,500 538,500 2 N64 Oct 96 364,000 703,000 Wii Dec 06 704,750 1,243,250 3 N64 Nov 96 591,250 1,294,250 Wii Jan 07 485,000 1,728,250 500,000 more Wii's that's a decent number In Japan? 12 N64 09/08/96 28,750 1,124,500 Wii 02/18/07 62,500 1,649,500 Again 500,000 more With the Game cube? 1 GC Nov 01 728,750 728,750 Wii Nov 06 538,500 538,500 2 GC Dec 01 571,500 1,300,250 Wii Dec 06 704,750 1,243,250 3 GC Jan 02 62,000 1,362,250 Wii Jan 07 485,000 1,728,250 just under 400,000 more 12 GC 12/02/01 43,250 518,750 Wii 02/18/07 62,500 1,649,500 1,100,000 more By my count that put's wii well ahead of both N64 and GC

I was too young to remember N64. My first game I got with the system was Super Smash Bros. After that in no particular order there was OoT, F-Zero GX, Starfox, FIFA, Pokemon Stadium, Pokemon Puzzle League (So much better than it sounds, seriously it was good), Goldeneye, Mario Party, WWF No Mercy, Mario Kart, and some others. I got the N64 very late in it's life cycle. Besides that Wii is going to do better than N64 and GC guaranteed.

Look at how the N64 and GC sold in Japan and Europe for their first 6 months... N64 and GC had fantastic launches in America, as good or better than the PS2 or Wii... And America remained the only competitive (10m+ sales) market for N64 and GC. But unlike those two systems, Wii has had a fantastic launch in all three major territories. In Japan, Wii is already ahead of 6-month sales for N64 after only 3 months, and ahead of 1-year sales for GC. Wii has sold 12% of N64 and GCs combined 10-year total already in Europe. Furthermore, Wii looks to be maintaining its sales beyond the first two months even in America. GC sales fell off after the 2-month Xmas/launch period in America, while Wii put up record January numbers. Though its not a fair comparison because N64 launched in a September, Wii is even ahead of N64's 3-month sales, and will remain ahead at the 6-month mark with 250,000 a month Feb-April, which sounds totally reasonable after seeing those Jan numbers which were managed with only a single game release. So basically matching American launches of previous consoles, while maintaining sales better post-launch, and having much better Japanese and European showings ought to prove that Wii is a different beast.
