Well, duh...I didn't know that .  I was indicating that the meaningful goal for Sony is to pass 360 LTD sales (and not worry too much what the 360 was doing 10 months ago) as this will affect which of the two is chosen as the lead development console.  I do also acknowledge this will also be affected by sales revenue generated for software publishers and this has already been discussed on another thread which shows the Sony machine to be more than holding its own.

I'm not knocking the PS3.  I may get one in the future, and with every AAA game released on the system the argument for making that purchase becomes more compelling.  Who knows, maybe the long term results of this console generation will show that the only way Sony would win both the hi-def and the console wars was to accept a painful period in console sales until costs decreased, and Ken Kutaragi's business decisions will be vindicated.

let me ask u all this.. because it seems like because of the ps2 that's everyones excuse or defense of the ps3 not outselling the 360 yet...
what 600 dollar system at launch has ever been this successful ? what system ? and not only that but is gaining ground on its direct competitor? answers anyone?

To be fair the 20 gig Playstation 3 sold at the $499.99 pricepoint in 2006, but you make an excellent point.  The PS3 is trailing the PS2 at the same point in it's life but the PS2 was significantly cheaper. 

It would be stupid to argue that the PS3 was a sucess from a marketshare or profitability perspective it currently has the least marketshare and isn't directly making alot of profit for Sony.

But the PS3 is a sucess in ways that aren't neccaserily quantifiable. The PS3 was able to sell well at a price point which no other console this generation would have been able too, this demonstates the power of the playstation brand .Granted the PS3 didn't actualy sell to well but I think we can agree that it would have been much more competetive with the Wii with a lower price point ( it managed to outsell the 360 for most of this year with almost 2X it's price point).

The PS3 also won the HD Format war for Sony this could result in years of royalty fees from the use of Blu-Ray technology which could potentialy cover the PS3's losses but this is entirely dependant on Blu-Ray's sucess.

It also boasts some of the most significant games this generation MGS4 , LBP , Killzone 2 , GT5:P , Uncharted all pushing the boundaries of graphical quality and creativity.

Yes the PS3 isn't the high flyer that we all anticipated it to be but it still managed to achieve things that it's competition wern't capable of.

 The 20 gigger was almost immediatly discountinued. Sony barely restocked them at all when they werent even discountinued.

at this $399 price point the ps3 is doing really well, all ps3 needs to do is track similar to 360 over the holiday season.

with all the price cut to happen in 2009, ps3 will stretch ahead and heavily close the gap, can anyone remeber when the last time ps3 had a major price drop the weekly sale for that week almost toppled 600k

when it was 360 major price drop 1.5 months ago the weekly sale on that week rose to 180k

i expect sony to deliver a massive price drop in 2009 a £249 or £229 ps3 will be a killer

with 360 you can only go so low and be operatable, eg look at price of ps2? they can only go so low they cant start selling ps2 for £19.99

 what does that have anything to do with this thread? Just because he doesn't worship the same consoles as other people doesn't make his point not valid. Don't try to discredit him like that. It's a very stupid point... if you can even call it a point.

I did I also provided the numbers for proof... maybe you should go check the batteries on your calculator... or the wiring in your head... because somewhere the addition is messing up with you....
