Looking Behind the Curtain

I remember teaching my cousin how to play Wii Tennis, and when he went to serve the ball, he lifted his left hand, the one not holding the Wii remote, to toss. At that moment, he didn’t understand how the Wii worked.

All he knew was that it was some sort of magical machine that mimicked your real life movements. It was a joyous occasion and a incredible exploratory experience.

But the innocence did not last long. Upon further experimentation, he learned how the controller worked, discovering that a quick snap of the wrist gave the same forehand as a loopy swing of his whole upper body. As the initial amazement wore off, Wii Tennis became simply another video game.

...

i wonder if the author had the same disappointment when he found out santa clause isn't real, or that daniel ratcliff isn't acually a wizard in real life, or that strippers aren't actually into him.

the illustion is part of the fun, the immersion.  i wonder he relizes that when he's playing halo (or whatever game he does love) that he's not actually a space marine killing aliens.  they are just computer programs running a script.

...personally, i loved wii sports.  but hey, if you have no imagination you'll probably never have fun in life.

Three games worth playing IMO SMG and Zedla TP(legendary and I love them both) and SSBB(fun for multiplayer).

Everything else is not indicative of a game with such a massive library.

You've just proved his point.

SMG = Super Mario 64 + Remote Shaking (If it was a button it would be very similar)

TP = Ocarina of Time + Remote Shaking (Swordfigting is not 1:1)

SSBB = Better with a GC controller

Now, these are undeniably great games, but the Wii Remote added very little to them. The closest i've seen Nintendo come to remaking a core series with Wii controls is Prime 3, but every other aspect of that game was poor compared to previous Prime titles so it didn't work.

So, yes, I agree with the sentiment of the article. Nintendo could have done more, both on hardware and software, to deliver the revolution they promised to all audiences. However, it is a commercial success and could not have made more money for Nintendo even if they had improved it.

So, from now on, I want to see both core and expanded audience titles making more use of the Wii Remote's unique properties.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

it have failed the Snobcores not the rest of us.

Good read, but i dont really agree with the Author.

Especially about the Wii mote and overall control scheme, it's unrealistic ? (of course it always will be ) but anything on the Wii (in terms of control will be more realistic) then pressing O or X on the PS3.

And good developers do turn the Wiimote into success enriching gaming experience: RE4, MP3?, Budokai Tenkaichi 3 , No More Heroes (to name a few) Hell Mario and Sonic at the Olympic game is extremely fun and uses the Wii mote well (compared to horrible button mashing in Bejing 2008). It's opens new door for the developers the question is how will they use it.

Wii mote does not read your movements perfectly but i think most of people that do play Wii sports want 100% simulation? Wii Motion Plus is coming out and the author forgot about it.
Another quite lame critic is the fact that is not engagin enough physically, does he forget that Wiimote is a massive step forward from any other controller? And if he wants his kids to play the Ball and they dont, dont blame it on the console.

I think the upcomming release of the Wii MotionPlus shows that Nintendo is aware how the (original) Wiimote has fallen short of what people expected it to be; in fact, since it was (probably) worked on for 6 months to a year before they announced it, it demonstrates that Nintendo was aware (very) early on of the problem.

Beyond that, when the Wii shows even the smallest benefits (Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime and Boom Blox as examples) it is nearly impossible to think of playing these games with a controller again.

I agree with him where he says "If I want to open a virtual door and am asked to turn the Wii remote instead of pressing a button, that doesn’t make the experience more immersive." I played Disaster Day of Crisis for a couple of hours and found it so annoying and pointless that I had to twist the remote to open doors. Would prefer to just press A to open doors.

But to suggest that Wii Sports doesn't immerse you is ridiculous. That has to be the most immersive game ever. That is what has made it such a hit amongst non-gamers such as the elderly. They are too old and fragile to go bowling (swinging a tennis racket and running around the court is a big NO NO. But with Wii Sports they feel they are on the court or actually bowling.

Plus to use Wii and failed in the same sentence is equally ridiculous (unless you are talking about third parties). Anyone that expected that playing a Wii game would feel like the real thing had very unrealistic expectations.

The article seemed like just a hate filled opinion. Calling the Wii a failure is silly in just about any regard. And those who thought it would bring you into a virtaul reality world was just being ridiculous. It's still just a game console with motion sensing gameplay.

He wasnt hating on the wii just saying what he disliked about the wii.

          ^^^This.

I like the 2 part acticle and like most things nothing is perfect; ESPECIALLY when unproved assumptions are made. Hardcore gamers want nutts over the Wii thinking 1:1 movement, or that programmers would be able to take advantage of this technology quickly. All assumptions that took on truths in their minds.

...When I got my Wii i got it cause I thought it would be fun, So far that experience hasn't changed. I expect more now from Wii Motion+, understanding more of it's advantages for the Wiimote, but I still don't expect programmers to be able to fully take advantage of it just yet.

...So far, the games that have benefited from the Wiimote(Zack&Wiki for example) are few and far between, but does this take away from the fun? I don't think so...

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

It is hard to make games for the wii if your releasing on other platforms. But in my personal opinion I hate using the wii for shooting games.
