NYANKS said: I think the Wii is pretty much a failure in almost every way save for the one that counts. It's making craploads of money, so game over from a sales perspective. But the games don't seem to be much better than the Gamecube games, it's this promise of interactivity that attracts people. I was never a fan of the Wiimote, I remember expressly calling it nothing but a waggle version of an A button. Someone was eventually gonna go down this path, so I can't be too angry about the Wii in that regard. I just think people are being misled, beneath the shimmer of Immersion! and Innovation!, the Wii ain't all that, or at least not much different than the Cube. Except of course, in the one area - the bottom line. |
There are (very) few games on the PS3 or XBox 360 that are not just incremental updates on previous generation games, where the primary improvement is better graphics; and in some cases the games are just incremental updates on Playstation 1 or N64 games with better graphics. I'm not saying this to bash the PS3 or XBox 360 either ...
From what I have seen, game design hit a plateau sometime between (about) 1998 and 2001 and we have been forced to revisit (basically) the same game with enhanced graphics several times by now. The Wiimote may not have delivered on its initial hype, but it has gotten people to start thinking about game development beyond how many polygons are being displayed to screen or how "advanced" your AI and physics are.

Well basically, it helped to remind people that graphics can't ever overtake gameplay in importance. But does diverting attention away from better graphics to waggle improve things all that much. I mean aside from the Stock Nintendo gems have they changed things THAT much? I mean really, a lot of games that utilize waggle is just a simple remapping of face buttons, and alot of times the new controls can be annoying, changing a simple thing into a minor annoyance. Basically I think it gets old quick. Of course, you can't go by casuals that may or may not stop playing after their wonderment has faded. A lot of core players like it, and I'm happy for them. But using waggle doesn't necessarily make people think about revolutionizing game development, a lot of times developers just find a way to make old stuff work with a new controller. Just seems like progress for the sake of, I can only take awaggle in very small doses and then I need a controller.

Now you just described all the bad Wii games with motion controls, with just a waggle. In the same way you do this I can easily make out the 360 and the PS3 as game machines who have brought absolutely zero innovation to the gaming market, Same controls, same games, same gameplay, why the hell would anyone spend money on this?
There are games which use the wiimore beyond just remapping keys to it and those are the games that make the console worth having. Meanwhile, anything outside of sports and fighting games can be done much better on a PC.
