Forums - PC Discussion - Why do game devolopers still make PC exclusive games?

Crysis on the PS3 would be about as easy as MSG4 on the Wii

Ignoring the fact that it was developed for the PC, and thus porting to the PS3 would decrease performance -

Crysis recommends 2gb of Ram under xp - PS3 has a quarter of this
2.2 Ghz Intel core 2 duo - The Cell can probably meet this (that's a gut feeling, anyone got proof either way?)
Recommends NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB or ATI 2900XT 512MB the PS3 has a decent 256 mb card = fail
requires a 12 gb install, which is fine for those of you with 80gb systems

You have no idea about PC/Console specs difference do you?

But I do have?... :)

Crysis recommends 2gb of Ram under xp - PS3 has a quarter of this

This already makes it quite impossible to make it work on PS3, if PS3 would have 1GB mem it might be possible to do...

Depends... CELL can handle all those floating points operations, but stuff like they use in AI and such would be a killer for PS3, if they are implemented in the way they use more instructions than CELL can handle.

Recommends NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB or ATI 2900XT 512MB the PS3 has a decent 256 mb card =

Well, at least textures would be much much worse on PS3 because of this. Theres also some shaders that would be a killer for PS3 GPU.

requires a 12 gb install, which is fine for those of you with 80gb systems

Or... You could just leave all those on Blu-Ray? ...and you would have to have installation that would help to cache some things on HD because Blu-Ray is way too slow compared to HD. :)

As a dev I just say that you can create stuff on PC without any investments first. You can share stuff you create much more easily than on any console. Also theres more than billion(yes, billion) computers out there that are used every day.

i dont think world of warcraft is coming to hd consoles btw but i gess things like the agency on pc and ps3

I don't know about that. The HD consoles are showing great interest in MMO RPG's at the moment. It would give them a great edge over their competitors MMO.

Crysis doesn't need to beon HD consoles, they've already seen that they have a large market for shooters. The question is will MMO RPG's sell well as well?

I really want to see these MMOs come out on the consoles, because I really want to see how they handle the biggest part of an MMO, the community. Without a keyboard how are you gonna communicate to the other players quickly and efficiently? If you say through headsets then I can already tell you have not touched WoW. Voice does not work well in groups of above 10 people, even raids of 40 people would get unruly and had to be kept in check DURING the raid. It would be an utter mess.

The other difficulty would be the controls. I have 4 hotbars set up in wow each one haveing 12 kotkeys. How is a console supposed to even begin to control that sort of thing? Not to mention all of the menus and inventory. The game was clearly made for a PC and it will stay there and won't move until the consoles become even bigger ripooffs of PCs. That's any game that has followed the already set in stone standard that Blizzard set with their very streamlined UI. Any MMO game on the consoles would have to have some very big sacrafices and sme very good design decisions to not fail at controls.

I'm a little hurt :P

I agree that back in the days of cartridge based consoles, you didn't need as much RAM as a computer for the same performance. But nowadays the only difference is that a PC has a more resource intensive OS to run at the same time. Vista home basic uses 450 mb of ram to run, without programs open (or at least it did on my lappy before I formatted it and got Xubuntu) leaving just over 1.5 gb just for running Crysis.

Now, even if the PS3 OS uses 0 mb (which is certainly not true, due to the in game XMB, the PS3 OS chews through RAM) then a PS3 would still have less than a third of the recommended RAM for running the game

And about the install, Crysis has alot more to load than MGS4 in terms of textures and effects. How much was the total install size for MGS4? Because if it were to come onto PS3, the Crysis install would be much bigger than that.

Please, if you actually believe the PS3 could run Crysis, say so, so that I can ridicule you

Becuase the market is vastly more massive than any console. Because piracy of 10% 500+million is still more purchasing users than 10% of 120million. Because it's easier to develope for. Because there are no hardass regulations. Because anyone can release a PC game and don't need to be "liscenced by". Becuase PC software design is standard courses in shools while consoles have custom api. Seriously why wouldn't PC devs not want to continue with PC dev. Because PC developers are less lazy than console counterparts.

Yes I said it. While console devs bitch and whine about boo hoo console hardware guys are giving us this and that. PC devs pretty much no and adapt from the get go that they have no upper end support. I'm looking at you who whine a bitch about Nintendo online offering.

PC developement is the grandady of game dev and still is. From a console point of view all you see are the multi console companies produce a small handfull of games. But if you come from the PC side the games coming are MASSIVE that dwarf consoles every year since the inernet started. From small to large, they come.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

I love PC gaming a thousand times better than consoles.  But with piracy it makes no sense.

all the previous answer were correct :)

also, I add you shouldn't believe to everything PRs says. They say "PC gaming is dying because of piracy" since 1994 at least.

The point is: PC is an open platform, and the big ones don't like this. They don't because they have much lesser control on an open platform. on X360 MS has decided that "Live" is not free? Then so it is and you can't do nothing about this. On PC, they decided the same thing, but a small indipendent software house called Valve brought a small program called "Steam", and "Live" on the PC was not successful at all.

If software houses are still doing PC games, it's because they earn money doing them. It's plain and simple. Everywhere on the internet Crysis was considered a sales failure, but after having spent 50 millions in its development, Crytek is simply fine, so fine they had enough money to buy another software house. This means Crysis wasn't such a failure, it's quite an evidence.

Actually the PS3 has only got 256mb of ram and from that you take away some for the OS. So Crysis would have to be stuffed into a space 1/6th the size on the PS3.

Tease.

Because it is much, much cheaper. That's the reason.
