Hmm, tough choice:

SNES
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Final Fantasy VI

PS1
Xenogears (!)
Suikoden II
Final Fantasy VII

I call it a tie. PS2 was great as well, but misses that one outstanding game that the others do have in Chrono Trigger and Xenogears.

Really??? because if i only take Square Enix, i can name 4:

Dragon Quest VIII: The Journey of the Cursed King

Final Fantasy X

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time

Kingdom Hearts

And that's without naming others like Dark Cloud 2, Disgaea, Xenosaga, etc.

Like I said: PS2 has a lot of great RPGs, and I agree that FFX, SO and DQ are great, but what I meant was that Chrono Trigger and Xenogears are outside that league. Maybe because they don't belong to a series they have more impact and a more unique experience.

That's what I miss on PS2 and that's why I feel SNES and PS1 are better RPG consoles.

etc etc etc I could go on all day.

Correct. This gen especially is making PC look like the God of RPGs because it has more good RPGs than all consoles combined so far.

But for the OP's question, I would say SNES is the top RPG console.

persona 3 gives the crown to ps2 +)

Real RPG's are on the PC.

JRPGs.. yuck

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)
PC: 10^9
Wii: 10^8

PS1 - All Final Fantasies bar 3 and X upwards are available for it in one form or another. And there are numerous other great titles for it as well.

Infact screw that, PS2 because you get all the PS2 RPGs and can play all the PS1 ones as well.

Hmm, pie.

If we are considering consles then the ps3.  Mine plays ps1,2&3 games.  The Wii would also be considered being it plays Cube and Wii games and some of the classic rpgs can be downloaded.

I think the only problem with the ps2 for rpgs and that there were many but most of them weren't groun breaking like the snes/ps1 games were.

I get your point, for me Kingdom Hearts, Disgaea and Dark Cloud 2 had that kind of impact, and DQ8 was finally a Dragon Quest game that i love nearly as much as DQ3 (my favorite in the series), that's why Level-5 is one of my favorite young companies, i mean, 2 of my 4 favorite PS2 RPGs are developed by them...

That's why i can't decide between SNES, PS1 and PS2 because they have all their share of merits... I guess i'll put the SNES and PS1 up because almost all RPGs on PS2 follow the pattern created in these two consoles...
