PS2 or PS1...i really can't tell.......i think the PS2 has more rpgs than PS1, but the PS1 titles was stronger and a little more enjoyable....i am leaning to the PS1 on that

for consoles , it has to be SNES. home to some of the best JRPGs imo.
But if the question is slightly changed to platform, then i suppose PC pwns all

@trestres

according to wikipedia its a role playing game
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda_(series)

Have you even read the page?

The Legend of Zelda (ゼルダの伝説 Zeruda no Densetsu?) is a high fantasy action-adventure video game series created by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and developed and published by Nintendo. The gameplay consists of a mixture of action, adventure, puzzle solving, role-playing and occasional platforming, stealth and racing elements.

It clearly says action-adventure... Sure there are role-playing elements but there are racing elements as well...

However, I agree that the SNES is the best console for rpg. You forgot great RPG such as Final Fantasy VI.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

@16-bit gamer: I don't know the exact definition, but I can tell which game is or isn't one. ALttP doesn't revolve around customizing your characters, learning skills, leveling up, making a party, fighting in turns. Zelda is just an Action-Adventure game, and the best of it's kind.

Actually, Zelda:aLttP is an RPG (Adventure Role Playing for a better terminology).

A Lot of people Mistake an RPG to be that of gaining Experience points and leveling a character and thus, that is what defines an RPG.  This is commonly mistaken because of the introduction and heavy use of it through mostly JRPG's like FF and DQ.

The origional concept of an RPG is one where a character has a particular amount of health (Link with his hearts), and so too does the enemy.  It is Story Driven and you are able to do many other things other then just follow a single path (Like a platformer).   In essence, you are taking on the 'Role' of the character and gaining items and other such things which you use to help your journey.  You also usually gain more HP as you progress the story (ie.  Gain Heart Units in Zelda), and the extra HP will help you defeat harder enemies.

Zelda:aLttP is an RPG.  There's no doubt about that.  Customizing your characters, learning skills, leveling up, making a party, fighting in turns, are all extra parts to deepen an RPG experience, but they are not what defines an RPG.  And don't forget, not all RPG's do you gain party members,  Not all RPG's (mainly the earlier ones but some newer ones too) do you learn new skills.  There are many types of RPG's but the ones you obviously are thinking of are mainly JRPG's... Don't forget WRPG's, SRPG's, Action RPG's, Adventure RPG's, etc.

It's me...  no really, it IS me!!!

PS1, most of the best SNES RPGs have been ported with improvements to the GBA.

The DS only need a 3D FFVI remake and a paper mario game and is perfect

lufia 2, terranigma, final fantasy 6, chrono trigger, earthbound, super mario rpg....snes is my choice

PS2. Wouldn't even consider a PS1 as the PS2 can play all the PS1 games... so, I am not sure why people are even listing the PS1 ;)

I fully expect the wii to be the best console this gen (will take years), and possibly pass the PS2.

Look at the OP avatar, Snes is the best. So many unique games.
