Forums - Gaming Discussion - Game of the year 2007

Super Mario Galaxy, I would say Super Smash Bros Brawl but given its release date it would technically be considered an 08 release.

don't forgot about Wii sports.........

ps3 uncharted wii smash bros 360 halo 3 (or mass effect)

sony and nintendo supporter

i  do not trust microsoft they screwed me over the last time with vista

WiiFit!

Let me first say that I think GOTY 2006 was hands down, no questions, Wii Sports. GOTY cannot just be a great, high quality, evolutionary game. It should be a revolutionary game that takes the world by storm and demonstrates the potential to influence future games.

Until it was delayed, I thought Spore would be that game for 2007. I think it will be competing with Wii Fit and LittleBigPlanet in 2008.

For 2007, there are several games which are at least close to that description. Smash Bros., COD4, GTA4 and Halo 3 are not, IMO. They are high-polish evolutionary games.

The ones I'm watching as GOTY candidates are, in order:

1. Super Mario Galaxy
2. Assassin's Creed
3. Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
4. Metroid Prime 3

Galaxy is an evolutionary game in many ways, but the gravity-based puzzles, the IR pointer use and the co-op play are potentially radical innovations.

Assassin's Creed is a literal merging of form and function; of art and gameplay. Prince of Persia style platforming in a sandbox world is maybe the freshest approach to sandbox play since GTAIII. The one 2007 game I'm jealous of as a Wii guy.

Phantom Hourglass and Metroid Prime 3 will really have to impress to leapfrog those two. It sounds like both games will get extremely good reviews for their perfectly polished and innovative controls, but I expect these other two games will be influential even beyond that.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Considering that a lot of the big game sites are still very Sony and Microsoft skewed, I'm going to say, forget about any Wii games making it into the top spots. However, I'm hoping for something like this:

Wii: Mario Galaxy
PS3: Little Big Planet
360: Halo 3
DS: Zelda Phantom Hourglass
PSP: ?
PS2: ?

I'd also love to see Metroid Prime 3 win some awards, I just started playing Metroid Prime 1 again... I've played gears, splinter cell 360, quake 4 etc... Metroid still stands up really really well to anything on the 360... I actually was shocked at how good it still looks. I fell in love with Samus all over again... :)

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

If they can get the combat done right, I can see Assassin's Creed going far.

Otherwise, I'd bet on Mario Galaxy and Little Big Planet for the other contenders.

My guess is that Little Big Planet will win a lot of awards, and so will Mario.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Home systems - Heavenly Sword

Handhelds - Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

LBP doesn't come out this year. A demo does, but not the game.

I absolutely agree with all your assessments.

Wii Sports was, in my opinion, the game of the year last year by a mile. How long has it been since there was any game as influential as Wii Sports? It's difficult to say, but I'd put Wii Sports in the top 3 most influential games produced by Nintendo ever -- which is saying a whole lot, given that they invented a couple core genres.
