Forums - Sony Discussion - Rumors of Price cut for European PS3, Freeview Tv service and VOD service

MCV, the biggest source of trade news for the European gaming and interactive software industries says that sony is going to announce an actual price cut for the European PS3, as well as Freeview TV Service which is a cable service that europeans can watch for free if they have the right tuner or whatever which I assume will be incorporated into the European version of the PS3, as well as the unveiling of Sony's upcoming Video on Demand Service.  I think that Sony offers something similar to the Freeview Tv service for the PS3 in Korea, but i'm not sure about this.  Either way, it looks like Sony is pushing to make the PS3 offer more content, to increase the value to cost ratio for consumers.  Good stuff!

The VOD service, will earn Sony some nice $$$ if they can customize it well enough.  That is, they should give Europeans the movies that the Europeans want to see, the movies that americans want to see, and so on.  A lot of what they are going to rent through this service will be movies that Sony Pictures actually owns, so just about all of the money that will be coming in from this will be pure gravy.

whens that euro show ?

you can buy a freeview box for as cheap as £20 / 30 Euro / $40 so don't think it's going to be a huge selling point.

And getting Freeview is the poor mans equivalent of Sky or cable so I wouldn't have thought people who choose Freeview would on the whole want to spend £400 on a PS3.

So they are adding hardware and reducing the price? Seems a bit odd after they cut costs by removing hardware (emotion engine). And Freeview does seem a bit of an odd choice to include, particularly as the demographic who are buying a PS3 are already likely to have Sky or Cable anyway.

They do need to do something in the UK at least though, the starter pack is obviously not good enough value for money. You can already get a PS3, extra Sixaxis controller and 3 games for the launch price/starter pack price.

To follow up on this news, today David Reeves promised fireworks at the Leipzing show, I'm assuming he is talking about this among other things.

The Leipzing show is August 21 I believe and there are supposed to be announcements from both MS and Sony there.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

I don't think they will be adding hardware for the freeview TV. I think it will probably be something like iptv.

Reeves is sure promising a grand show for Sony. He said that it will be better than the E3 showing. It wasn't great, but it was the best there. I can't wait.

Well, you need a little cable-box like peice of hardware to run freeview TV.  I assume that Sony will add this to the European PS3, otherwise I can't figure out the point of the announcement at all.

btw, here is the short article from kotaku:

Couldn't Sony make a deal with the involved parties so that you could watch freeview TV over the internet on your PS3? This would remove the need for an hardware add on.
