Forums - Sony Discussion - LittleBigPlanet Review - "the best platform game ever created"

Lots of hate here, but you have to remember that people can and will have differing opinions. I think that the fun I've had with LBP coop already sets it up as being the best platformer I've ever played simply from a fun aspect. Couple that with the fantastic art design that takes you straight back to being a kid and the incredible variety and quality of some of the user created levels, and yes I think you could make the argument.

Best Platformer ever is Mario 64. Period. No 2d game will beat it. No matter how much we are given to create levels. MArio 64 is the best because it was a challenge. the 3d level design was second to none.

LBP is good, but even against 2d platformers like Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World that statement is bold. It's not just about user created content. Because Mario has characters that people love. LBP has little soft ants. What moves can you do?

See. LBP I'm looking forward to, but user created content does not warrant the best platformer title.

Characters, music, moves of the character, a world to lose yourself in (aka mushroom kingdom) and seriously, do you think any tool to create levels in LBP will beat Shigeru Miyamotos level design?????

Yes, because your pitching one mans (although he had a team) levels design against the potential creativity of millions.

So let me get this strait. LBP with far more limited design options than is available to a full game designer like Shigeru Miyamoto you think will be better? If shigsy wants a certain type of level he can change the move set of his character during production.

With LBP you cant. Which is why LBP is limited. Can LBP fly if you want him to? can he hover? Double jump? Morph? IT will be a good game, but seriously best platformer. Oh dear.

That's one that I've seen. Yes. He can... I'd expect him to be able to do the two other things too.

I really hope you prove me wrong, but I have seen lots of videos and none of the above is in LBP. Post a video, show me. I actually want you to be right. But MArio 64 has a massive lead from what I have seen in terms of best platformer.

Ahh. I stand corrected. It's not quite what I had in mind. As that video kinda shows the hovering eliminates any kind of platforming gameplay. Flying or hovering in platformers should be limited or hard to do. (Racoon suit, cape, dixie's pony tail etc, etc.)

Unless it has its own Hollywood movie starring Fred Savage made just to promote it then LBP still has a long way to go before being best platformer ever

Based on this I expect Little Big Planet to have a metacritic ranking higher then Super Mario Galaxy, I also expect it to sale FAR better then Super Mario Galaxy alone, not including other platformers that were ever created. If it can't do this then it fails.

...This is the kind of stuff that I notice bout video game "journalist" that is frustrating at time. Sure everyone has a bias, but when you're SUPPOSE to be reviewing a product, don't look at the game in a vacuum. Far too many reviewers give personal conjecture instead of clear unbias opinions. ...Saying Little Big Planet is a great game, would have been enough...

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

I won't undermine the value of this game, but that's a VERY bold statment.

Also, I'm happy about those casuals they were talking about. This may just be our breaktrough.

I know what you're getting at, but I'm a believer after the beta. I honestly believe that LBP is the best platformer I've ever played. I would have loved to see mario go in this direction when it went 3D.

i love how everyone seems to LOVE LBP so much that people in denial are now using how much people like it as a negative.....this is incredibly entertaining to watch the people who predicted this game would bomb (review wise/sales)

I have no problem if it is after some time determined to be, in many people's opinion, the best platformer ever.

What i don't like is that it seems every second major release this generation is hailed as being the best thing ever before they are even released and fully played.

Sure there have been some great games this generation but if you were to believe mainstream gaming media, this is hands down the best generation ever, and it just isn't.........yet.

Back in generations past i would look at a single review of a game to reassure me that it wasn't total crap and then i would happily buy it. These days if games don't get > 93.4267% on Gamerankings they are considered a failure. If people were to hold their movies to such high standards the industry would have died years ago. When did good, stop being good enough?

^yeah.....net time you go for witty please make sure you know the history of that argument

everyone loved GTA 4, is it the best game ever (full of glitchs, weak story, tons of fetch quests) so really.....

so really having reviewers just love your game does not go as far as it once did

Bahaha... care to put your money where your mouth is?

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

Those are words that have been said more way more this generation than they ought to have been.

Furthermore, what does "in many ways LBP is the best platform game ever created" exactly mean?

so when people say "what about the terrible core gameplay?" they have an excuse and  they  can say they were only talking about the fabulous grapics and novel level editor

I played this game for an hour trying to give it a fair chance and spent another 2 with the level creator, but the core gameplay mechanics are just aweful,  unless they allow heavy modification of the core gameplay the user created content will never take over the world as they said,  it only has an illusion of freedom,

The gameplay isn't anywhere near Super Mario Bros 3, Kirby's Adventure or Sonic and Knuckles,

the gameplay is even up to snuff with the original Rayman.  It is closer to Zool in feel,

If this game had been during the 16 bit era without the show visuals it would have been written as a generic platformer with medicore mechanics and a level editor

Once the illusion of freedom dissapates this game will be rememberred for what it is an really pretty, but really medicore platformer,

Good thing there is freedom of speach, cus you are of the few that think is not a great game. Hope it makes you feel special.
