Forums - Sony Discussion - The future of PS3 SKUs/ pricecuts, my predictions.

I predict Sony will never drop the price in America below $599 next year even and not introduce new SKUs until the price is permanently $499 or less.

I think Sony'll focus on Europe where the average PS3 selling price is:

$825

Yes, that's right. Sony are almost making a profit in Europe, and sales aren't as poor as Japan.

hehehe almost. They are making a profit at least in europe.

I would say that, if things come out as you say, Sony would get screwed big time. 2010 without mass market prices would be deadly for the PS3.

Whats mass market price these days ?

The generally accepted answer is 199, but we'll see if that's true this time around.

That was for the number for the last gen was it not ?  With the prices i see many electronics at, good bet is it will be higher.

Then theres the whole value thing, if consumer thinks a PS3 is a great buy at 399 or 299 at 199 its a freaking steal.

That's stupid! Then people who already bought PS3s wouls be pissed off. And costs would screw Sony.

If you're talking about bigger hard drives, you can put just about any 2.5" (notebook) hard drive in the PS3 and replacing the hard drive does not void the warranty and is also shown how to do in the PS3's manual. So, for up to $100 I can go to http://newegg.com and pick up a hard drive that can have up to about 160gigs of space.

*edit* also, the costs will decrease over time. Things like removing the EE, switching to 65nm parts, ect will affect the cost of the system to produce and also the price for consumers.

I saw a 250gb 2.5 ata HDD for only $169.99 at best buy I was goin to buy it but I have around 40 gigs of data left in ma ps3.

How do you figure Sony is making a profit in Europe? Is it based on the European retail price?

It's possible, but 199 has been the sweet spot for several generations, not just the last one. PS1 and PS2 both really took off at 199.

So it's not like it's been gradually growing every generation -- 99 for the SNES/Genesis, 149 for the PS1/N64, 199 for the PS2/GC/Xbox -- it's been pretty stable at 199 for a long time. So again -- possible, but I'd say unlikely.
