Non American friendly? Basketball is big all around the world, baseball is huge in the Americas and Asia, soccer is huge everywhere but America, and hockey is popular in all cold weather countries. The only thing that should have been added, but as stated in the OP that they were limited to 6, is auto racing which is big everywhere.

If you were to make a list of the most popular sports worldwide they would probably go like this:

Soccer

Auto Racing

Basketball

Baseball

Hockey

Football

Football is only popular in Canada, US, and Mexico while the other have a worldwide presence.

American football, baseball and basketball shouldn't be on there while volleyball, cricket and tennis should be.

For me personally its rugby or cricket, the first of which is what New Zealand is best in the world at and the second is just really interesting.

it seems Asia influences that list pretty heavily, they only have upwards of 3 billion people there.

Football. The real kind.

This. I love watching it and it's very fun to play.

Real Football is far the best sport. You know the non-soccer kind. The only thing more exciting is watching the highlight reels of Michael Jordan or Wayne Gretzky.

Football of course. 2010 World Cup qualification is at the moment ;)

Sure, the leagues over here aren't that popular, but they do exist. And NFL itself does have a following in Europe, I would've thought the London match last year would show you that, and again this year. Both sold out within minutes.

I voted NFL.

yes, London did manage to sell out the stadium for a nfl game, but nfl europe tanked hard and the only place where the fans gave a damn was germany.  if you brought man u and real madrid over to any US city it would sell out fast, but that doens't mean we here in the US really give a damn about soccer.
