Forums - General Discussion - Dow index no longer over 9000;GM shares at 58-year low;WSJ:recession's here

Well, crisis seems to have been averted today (only a 50 point drop), but investor confidence is just plain awful as demonstrated by the 700 point at the beginning of the day. People are just plain spooked.

Edit: Drop was actually 128 points.  Not good, but not terrible compared to what we have seen.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. I expect the Crisis to get worse after seeing this story.

"Bush vows to stabilise US economy"

I haven't read anything but the title yet... but this can't be good.

Lol, for sure.  Bush is like a withering touch to anything he comes near these days, including his own bailout plan.

What is very worriesome is that today we actually dropped below 8000 points (for a very short time, but notable nonetheless) in the DOW for the first time in probably at least 6-8 years.  I know the last time we hit 9000 was 2003.

Ok, my point was this crash is not any worse (so far) than the 1987 crash. We recovered from that just fine. We had a recession in 90-91, but we then made it to the 90's. The feds job is to minimalize the lows of the business cycle, they failed this time. It was be a bad recession, not a depression. If you look back at 1929 you will few similarities... the only common factor is market losses. (a in the 20's they did have isolated housing market crashes)

You're focusing too much on the stock market... This crisis is about much more than that, especially the credit market problem AND housing.

: )

I expected it to be see saw for a month or 2, but with a strong Holidays season things will revieve.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Credit is tight, not frozen. People can get loans. People with bad credit cannot get credit... booo hooo. Given people with bad credit loans is what started this mess.

Good news today. But anyone who thinks that one day's worth of good news can change an overall trend has a very narrow view of the market. We'll see in a few weeks if trends have been reversed or not.

A few weeks ago everyone thought a crisis like this couldn't happen. What the stock market says is by no means definitive ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if all these gains were lost by the end of the week.
