Forums - Sales Discussion - My little experience in a EB games

Last sunday I went to an EB games shop with my girlfriend to buy games for her Nintendo DS. While in front of the DS games, a 17 or 18 years old salesman came and asked us if we need some help.  My girlfriend wanted to buy a point and click game like Ace Attorney and asked the salesman if they received some good feedbacks on those kind of games and which one is the best. Much to my astonishment the salesman replied that people in general didn't give him feedback on DS and Wii games because ''those consoles aren't very popular''.

Stunned by his answer I informed him that Wii and DS are the most popular console and that the Wii sold much better than PS3 or X360. The guy replied that it was because asian countries are buying Wii massively and that in NA Wii is still less popular than X360 or PS3. Then I advised him to consult a site named VG Chartz and told him that Wii outsell PS3 long time ago and X360 too. The guy didn't believe me and his partner who heard our conversation tell him I was right and that Wii is selling better than any other consoles. The guy also said that Wii Fit was'nt so popular because they're only receiving 1 or 2 by week and this is why it is hard to find in store and it was the same for the Wii. BTW there was a guy buying a Wii at the cash and he said that it was an exception.

Finally my girlfriend decided to buy a game named Hotel Dusk : Room 215 (any feedbacks for this game anyone?) and while we were waiting at the cash, the same salesman was arguing with a customer about how the X360 was the best console on the market while the customer highly praised the PS3, saying X360 was just good to play Fable 2.

What lesson can we learn from this story? Wii and DS are selling while X360 and PS3 are fighting each others for the crumbs. :P

Do you guys think that some biased salesman can impact on the choices of the customers? Do you believe there is a lot of fanboys who does'nt want to see the real situation of the market? What are your opinions?

Obviously this guy was either:

1. ignorant of the sales patterns in the industry, and probably his own store
2. a fanboy who doesn't want to admit Nintendomination

He was both ignorant and fanboy but also very incompetent : when I asked him if he has M&S at the olympic games in stock he didn't even know that game.

Most hard core gamers are PS3 and 360 owners and most employees of EB games are thee cause they are hard core gamers, sure isnt for the pay. That being said they should be more informed. I would think they may have a small effect on sales cause I have seen them stear moms to certain things I would not recommend. I would think that % is small though. I alaways say be an informed customer on ANYTHING you buy, TV, cell phone, computer, furniture and yes even games.

By the way the review of Hotel dusk were good though I dont own it

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

He's a 17 year old gamer. Not much else to expect. Halo and GTA more than likely run his video game life.

That's what I though but much as dishonesty as that is difficult to beat.

sounds like you are biased too.. no better than him after reading your conclusion.

Check out my game about moles ^

Most EB employees that I have encountered are no different. BTW, Hotel Dusk is one of the only DS games that I enjoyed, an excellent adventure game.

I'm reporting facts where do you see I'm biased? Are you also thinking VG numbers are wrong and that in realty X360 or PS3 are selling more than Wii?

I could have told you not to go to Gamestop unless its the only convenient store to get to for games.

Since the PS2/GC/XB days, Gamestop employees have been heavily condemning of Nintendo products and would make up some amazingly mythical information. If I HAVE to go to a Gamestop, I get the title, and I'll ask if they have it in, but I will make ZERO chat with them otherwise. It's like asking a KKK member what they think of Obama.
