Forums - Gaming Discussion - Golden Axe... who else is getting it?

I adored Golden Axe in the arcades when I was a kid.  One of the few games that I played sooo much that I could beat it, solo, on one quarter (Heavy Barrel and Ninja Gaiden were the others -- oh yes, I spent a lot of quarters to get that good).

When I heard Golden Axe: Beast Rider was a wholehearted attempt at bringing the spirit of Golden Axe into the HD era, I was hooked.  I would have preferred to play the Barbarian guy, rather than the lady, but I do understand that Conan is out, and bikini-clad warfare is in, so I accept it.

I'm not gonna grab the game until I see which version (360 or PS3) has the better framerate/look, via the reviews, although I will favor the PS3 if they're the same, due to my affinity for the PS3 controller.

Lets face it, it probably won't score higher than an 8.0 average, and its not gonna sell millions.  I'm not caring.

Who else is gettin' this game?

Not me--I feel that it should at least include the Barbarian and Swordman.

I don't understand. If you're a fan of Golden Axe then why are you excited about this game? Other than a character and the name, this doesn't seem anything like Golden Axe at all. It looks like Viking: Battle of Asgard with rideable animals. I'm pretty sure Golden Axe was a co-op beat 'em up.

I'm not trying to mash on your opinion, but more on the fact that you think this is a wholehearted attempt at bringing the spirit of the series into the HD era. Nothing about this game even resembles the spirit of Golden Axe, at least to me.

All the reviews of Viking: Battle of Asgard were average or mediocre... when i played the game,i loved it... rpg elements with hack and slash... I will play Golden Axe and judge the game by my self.

That wasn't my point. I like Viking also. The point was Golden Axe (the original) and Viking are not similar games. They're making a game that should play something like Castle Crashers or The Warriors into something that looks like it plays like Viking. I'm not judging the quality of the game. I'm saying it isn't really upholding the spirit of what Golden Axe was about, which was 3 player co-op. This new one is a single player game. Imagine if the next Streets of Rage or Double Dragon came out in HD and the developers say it's single player.

I think you're missing the whole 3D-transition concept. You're essentially saying that Super Mario 64 isn't the same as Super Mario Bros, and thus it must suck?

Yes, of course Golden Axe was great as a co-op game. I won it many many times, both solo and with a pal. That's not what I was getting at. It was a straight-forward hack and slash, with rideable beasts -- yes, the original was co-op, but that's not what I'm after.

The characters, and harsh world of Golden Axe were very cool, and mostly this game seems to cover that pretty well. Its cool that you liked the co-op... but that wasn't all that Golden Axe was. There were LOTS of co-op arcade games by that time, and Golden Axe was not revolutionary in this regard, like Double Dragon was. Golden Axe was really the first game that really captured that "Conan the Cimmerian" feel, in a video game, in my opinion. That's what I'm looking forward to.

I liked Viking, and I even enjoyed the recent Conan hack and slash some, despite the cruddy boss fights (the music in that game was awesome). If this game captures the "barbarian" atmosphere, like games like "Rune" captured the Viking atmosphere, I will be pretty happy.  Games like Rune, God of War, Enclave, etc., which really capture that "savage" feel in an action are really enjoyable, IMO.

Golden Axe had that going for it, and I hope the new one has the same.  Co-op was not the defining feature of the original, from my point-of-view.

I'm not quite getting the first sentence. What does a 3D transition have to do with the developers excluding co-op in the new Golden Axe? I don't really see how that connects to Mario 64 which went from a series of single player 2D games to single player 3D games. I also never said the new Golden Axe would suck. I just think it's missing critical components of what made Golden Axe what it was. Not everybody plays a fighting game like Street Fighter or Smash Bros. with other people either, but I'm sure there would be quite a few WTF's if those series changed face and became single player fighting games with no options to play against others, only the computer.

To you I'm sure Golden Axe isn't missing much, besides your choice of character, but even you have to admit that the lack of other characters to use and the lack of co-op is a glaring ommision to a game with the Golden Axe handle. Reading over your last reply though, it seems your more content with getting a God of War/Viking/Conan game with Golden Axe settings and characters than you are getting an actual Golden Axe game.

I'm just stating that your personal definition of "a Golden Axe game" isn't shared by everyone, including myself, a seasoned veteran of the series.  I'm looking forward to the new iteration, and you are obviously not.  That's okay with me -- except the part where you kinda hijacked the thread to state your dissatisfaction with the new iteration, which you haven't even played.  LoL.

I think we've established that you are likely on the "not getting it"... umm "side".  If anyone else agrees with you in this thread, you can co-op with them on it heh. =)

This guy seems to agree with me:
