Forums - Gaming Discussion - Limited PS2 compat for Europe PS3 units??

Taken from Gamesindustry.biz: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=23003

PS2 game support to be "limited" Sony has changed the specification of the PlayStation 3 for Europe, raising doubts over the number of PlayStation 2 games that will be compatible with the next-gen machine. "Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3," said David Reeves, president of SCEE. Sony has said that 'a new combination of hardware and software emulation will enable the PS3 to be compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation titles, and a limited range of PS2 titles'. Sony will publish a backwards compatibility list on the PS3's launch day, March 23, with additional titles becoming compatible through downloads via the PlayStation Network. "The backwards compatibility is not going to be as good as in the US and Japanese models," a Sony spokesperson told Reuters. Although Sony has yet to detail the new specification fully, analyst Datamonitor suggests that a new PS3 model will feature a "new chassis" designed to bring manufacturing costs of the console down. "By utilising the latest hardware Sony is able to rationalise the number of components required," said the firm. "This move is significant, as it will have a positive impact on the PS3’s long-term cost profile." "By launching the PS3 in Europe with the new chassis, Sony has at a stroke removed one of the barriers to future price reductions, and providing it can make enough units available, Datamonitor believes there will be sustained growth in PS3 ownership as new users seek to benefit from the PS3’s enhanced features and functionality," said the analyst. Sony was unavailable for further comment at the time of going to press.
Whoa - huge news in my books. Have they revised the PS3 down already? And Europe gets to pay MORE for this inferior PS3? It would need to support 70-80% of all PS2 games without any patches, or gamers will be furious!

OMG it gets worse every day that passes !! Unless it is compatible with the big RPG I wanted, and some games like GoW2 and Shadow of the colossus, I'm not eager to buy one anymore, even after a price cut. That's like they don't want us to buy their console in Europe.

this is getting completely ridiculous! In a weird way, it would have made sense if the PS3 was in short supply and sony didn't want europeans to buy the PS3 so it could reallocate consoles to other markets... but from what i've read here, it's definitely not the case. Even in the sense of a future price drop, does sony think US and Japan are going to buy willingly this PS2.9 once it is released everywhere? I don't get it. can an expert speak up? Kwaab? what do you make of that? i am curious to know....

Damned why us again,

Who cares? The backward compatibility issues are even worse for the 360,does the 360 sell well?Yes.Are you buying the ps3 to play next gen games or old gen games?People who are critisizing the ps3 in this thread are just 360 fanboys who should look at their own backward compatibility issues. "In a statement the company added that some additional titles would be made compatible through regular firmware updates--a similar setup as in the US, where initially some previous Sony format games experienced problems, but many were fixed through online updates for the console. The Japanese and American PS3s play an estimated 98 percent of the old games. The first update is planned for the European and Australian launch on March 23, and gamers can check out compatibility on Sony's Web site, which will go live on the launch date." http://www.gamespot.com/news/6166312.html?action=convert&om_clk=latestnews&tag=latestnews;title;3

I could be wrong, but it sounds like the "eventual" dropping of the PS2 hardware in the PS3 isn't so "eventual" afterall ... The beauty of this is it wasn't long ago that Sony was bashing Microsoft because they did not have 100% backwards compatibility on the XBox 360

i disagree. If you'd take away the VC on my Wii, i would be very pissed. How could i play mario, kirby and co while waiting for the AAA titles? It is part of the experience this gen has to offer, riding on the "retro-trend". PS3 was too expensive, now it's too expensive and not even on par with the wii... i am now waiting for sony to announce that online is not necessary in europe....

I expect it works if not .........bad move Sony .

Your comparing MS 30% BC to Sony's lowest possible 70%. I feel they would not drop it till the early 80's which is not bad. We will not know until the list is out next month.

I heard the compatability was more around 98%. Even as such it is rumored that the software emulation may help to render the PS2 games in HD. http://img249.imageshack.us/my.php?image=highres2in9.jpg http://img249.imageshack.us/my.php?image=highresko6.jpg If these are true then it will be pretty cool. The first thing that pops into my mind is the question of the hardware scaler. But it is probably a ruse to lower manufacturing prices.
