I probably didnt' read up enough news to know the specifics on this.  does anyone know if mario kart wii online game play allows the users to choose to play only with his or her friends online? or it has to be anyone random?  personally i think i'd have more fun if the competition is against my own friends cuz we can talk smack to each other. i woudl hate it if i didnt have that option...

If it's like Mario Kart DS (and if I remember correctly) you probably pick one or the other. Personally, I hope they let you set up a match and invite friends while leaving spaces open for the public.
