Not really, b/c blu ray has brought costs up for the PS3 considerably, and still is holding them up b/c of:

-hardware/spec implied requirements for the GPU/CPU
-patents to panny and samsung
-not to mention the cost of the Blu ray drive itself

twesterm, i think that you're oversimplifying things a bit here.

I might be but you still get my point.  It's going to be at least another two years until we see the next XBox and in that time BluRay players will significally come down in price.

As for the other stuff, that cost is always there so that isn't a huge worry.

Yes but these are problems that Sony has right now, that MS does not.  If MS does indeed get a BD drive on its next console then it will have to deal with several expense issues that just are not a problem at the present point in time.

So then it will be around the same price level as the PS3.  Personally I don't like the high prices but in their eyes as long as they're about level with Sony they really don't care that much.

Yes, and I guess that you realize that MS's status as a cost leader (relative to sony) looks doubtful

Most of us are basicallly assuming that MS will have to incorporate a Blu ray drive in its next console, right?

Well, both MS and Sony will have to pay patent fees to Panasonic/Samsung/etc for the right to use it, BUT, Sony has the modest advantage of manufacturing Blu-ray drives due to a new joint venture with NEC and therefore won't have to pass on money to other manufacturers in order to make these drives.

If the 720 uses a blu-ray drive, then it will likely use Blu ray discs, correct?  Then, Sony, as the sole patent holder of the blu-ray disc will demand some $$$$ from MS and anybody else that wants to use a BD disc.

Also, if MS is in fact wanting to go this route, then they will likely want to have a relatively beefed up CPU/GPU combo in order to take advantage of the Blu ray drive, it doesn't make sense to pay for having a blu drive, and then receive unimpressive performance from the games played with it.

So, all in all, MS looks to not have the cost advantages that it has had with the 360, and therefore I might be able to conclude that this just won't help MS one bit.

Thoughts?

The problem starts with your basic assumption that they'll choose Blu-Ray. If they don't, your entire argument falls to the ground.

*If* they do, the question becomes the actuality of the licensing fees. They could be very low, and offset by a cutback somewhere else. Everything in your argument is based on possibly flawed assumptions.

Also, the argument that BR-DVD takes a beefed up CPU/GPU combo may be valid, but I really, really doubt that a machine produced in 2011 is going to have any possible problems running a Blu-Ray drive. Moores Law would state that a next-gen system will have about as many problems as the X360 did with running DVDs, since it's using a last-gen optical device.

Personally, I think Microsoft will jump ahead of BRDVD and just chose another option that has better licensing fees, provided the BR-DVD fees aren't very large.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

They'll use hd-dvd discs to prevent people coping games

1. They need the beefed up combo to take advantage of the games. Why would sony want a so-so CPU/GPU and an expensive BD drive? Having so-so specs while having a BD drive would be a waste b/c you wouldn't be able to do much at all with the games that you've paid a premium to have storage space on.
2. If MS chooses a proprietary format they won't even be able to play dvds which would be a big mistake. If MS chooses dvd then they won't be able to play Blu games which would make them eat sony's dust

I have a feeling MS will be using a different, most likely much larger disc format next gen then Blu-Ray. I forget what its called but there is supposedly a disc type that can handle 300-400GB?

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

@Kasz216 -But why would they want to do that and avoid being able to play a dvd on the next xbox? That's a big part of the reason why the PS2 won over the xbox. I don't see why MS and Sony can't work out a deal that they can both live with, although I expect sony to up the cost a bit still ;-0

What? Are you saying that Xbox can't play dvds?!?

You're making too many assumptions.

I didn't think that the original xbox could play dvds. Can it?

It doesn't make any business sense for Sony to up a fee specifically for Microsoft, especially when Sony licenses Microsoft products for their laptops. Not only that, but I'm sure Sony would love to have Blu-ray a standard format in the next Windows version. Should Microsoft be a dick and just make them pay extra because it's Sony?

Not gonna happen.

And Sony sold off manufacturing rights to the Cell awhile ago to Toshiba: http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/18/sony-sells-playstation-3s-cell-to-toshiba/

It's too soon to speculate on cost advantages/disadvantages of next-gen machines when we don't even have rumored specs.

If it couldn't, then buying this is a ripoff.
