Forums - Sony Discussion - Rachet & Clank comments - gameplay not innovative, no multiplayer

No doubt I'll get flamed to death for posting this, but here goes:

First off, does Ratchet look this good? The answer is clear: yes. But, is that enough to make the upcoming PS3-exclusive Ratchet & Clank Future worthwhile? Not necessarily.

As innovative and new as the graphics may appear, the gameplay feels identical to previous iterations of the Ratchet series. Of course, that's not a bad thing -- the franchise has rightfully earned its legions of fans. However, we couldn't help but feel as though we've played Tools of Destruction before. It feels more cinematic than before, but we were running, gunning, and swinging our wrench as though nothing had changed. Some may point to the new Groove-a-tron weapon, a colorful new weapon in Ratchet's arsenal. But, there are no significant gameplay ramifications: enemies will simply dance, instead of attack Ratchet. There's also a free-fall sequence, where the player must tilt the Sixaxis controller to navigate Ratchet past flying cars. But, these tilt controls do little to add a feeling of innovation to the series.

The polish of the game's presentation is certainly commendable, but we were puzzled by the lack of an adequate targeting system. The on-rails platforming, a series trademark, had us bored. Jumping left or right to avoid oncoming trains was tedious, at best. The utter simplicity of the sequence had us feeling like we were simply going through the motions. We're also disappointed to know that Insomniac has opted to remove a crucial component of the franchise in this latest rendition: multiplayer is gone.

Tools of Destruction might not end up being a bad game, but it did very little to convince us otherwise. We're sure that hardcore Ratchet fans will love it for its story, which will focus on the mysterious origins of its star. Although playing it safe might work for Insomniac and its fans, it's pretty obvious to us that team spent a lot more time focused on its graphics technology than what really matters: gameplay. As it is now, Tools of Destruction is an uninspired experience, one that feels like a backwards step for the series.

...

This was also the impression I picked up from looking at Uncharted - lovely looking game, with PS1/PS2 gameplay. At least LittleBigPlanet is on the way.

These things can often be wrong, as we all know. It's just one guy's opinion. Insomniac is one of my favorite PS developers, so I still have faith that this will be good unless I start hearing this from a good deal of critical sources.

I think that if you take a game for what it is, you get a different impression than if you compare it. Of course comparisons do matter.

Will R&C be worth $60? Not to me, many fans think otherwise. Good for them. I think the lack of Multiplayer is a shame, especially since PS3 is supposed to be competing with the 360. Of course one game isn't going to make or break Sony.

I can handle about one platformer per year... guess which one I AM buying this year. it starts with an "S" and ends in a "Y".

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

I've never really played any ratchet, jak or sly cooper games so i'm not really an expert in platformers but i always thought platform games should be simple. From what i always thought, rachet and clank's innovation lies with the unique and crazy weapon inventory and as long as they continue to create more unique weapons and ways to control them, this game should be good in my book. This is one of those games that don't need an overhaul in gaming experience, there doesn't need to be a cover system, over-the-shoulder aiming, insane realistic physics engine or complicated combo system. Ratchet has always been built on a foundation, cartoony platforming with many unique weapons at your disposal. Isn't that what insomiac is doing??? The Ratchet and Clank series does not need to prove new innovations or gameplay to the audiance for 2 simple reasons.
1. R&C has sold multi millions and already has a big fanbase with no real complaints of anykind of overhaul (how would people feel if they added cover systems and 3rd person gameplay to Halo??)
2. The foundation of the game (the unique and numerous weapons appeal) that made the game what it is today and sell well, is still there and focused on.

And sadly this far along it's hard to change the gameplay. Generally, when you do a first impression of your game, you want the complaints to be about the graphics with minor bugs or things just unfinished, but boring core gameplay and boring levels are hard to change at this point.

Of course this makes me smile a little on the inside since I'm not an Insomniac fan at all (nothing to do with the PS3 or their games, other reasons).

The only PS3 games that have been intriguing me since the beginning are:

LittleBigPlanet. And Metal gear solid 4.

LittleBigPlanet... This is what innovation should be!... God! Do i love this game! I buy systems for those kind of games! Innovatif... Looking good! Good gameplay!

Metal gear solid: Really nice graphics... Stealthy with guns! ... Looks really fluid!

And for ratchet and clank: I couldn't believe the game looked THAT GOOD! It looks like a REALLY NICE PIXAR FMV or something... ... Which is only a good thing! I sure hope they get the gameplay right! Cause they have the experience and the knowledge for it!...

SLY COOPER?!

Edit: I'd rather play Mario then R&C but that's just my opinion.

It was actually Super mario galaxY, and who wouldn't rather play supermario over anyother platformer??. Mario is the king of platformers. It's like saying "i'd rather play GT instead of PGR, or forza" or "i'd rather play FinalFantasy over lost odyssey"

Why people expect every single game to be innovative? When I read about fighters (oh no, another game when you have to fight), fpp shooters (why we are always forced to shoot in shooters) or platformers (jumping?) which are below expectation because of still same gameplay I feel sorry for reviewers. I'm sure they are unable to provide any example of novelty they want so badly...

I got the impression from that...er...impression that the bigger gripe is that the gameply is just stale.  There are basic types of gameplay that will always be fun, shooting things is fun and jumping is fun, but unless you vary what you're shooting or how and change up what you're jumping over, it gets old even for the core fans.

Even with sports games and fighters, they continually add something with each new iteration (though it has been a while since I've played a variety of fighters).
