Ummm wasn't dragon quest 8 on PS2. Doesn't PS2 have a bigger install base than the DS. hell isn't the PS2 the highest selling single console to date.

Yes, this is true. However:

1) We're only talking about Japan. That's the only place Dragon Quest matters.

2) The DS is currently at 85 percent of the PS2's install base there. It will absolutely blow past the PS2's install base by the end of the year

3) The DS has a larger install base in Japan now than the PS2 did when DQ VIII was released

So DQ IX actually does have a better environment (install base + projected base growth) than DQ VIII did, but that doesn't detract from the PS2's overall dominance. You are correct -- worldwide, the PS2 is the best selling system in history, be it home console or handheld.

Heh, wouldn't it be great if everything was that simple?  There are a lot of other factors, such as attach rate, popularity, competition, and of course the other games in the library.  But, hey, just for the hell of it, let's go with your theory.  Graphs are fun though, so lets play with this one.

Here we have a graph comparing current Japanese sales of the PS2, DS, and PS3.  Time for some fun math!  After only 2 and a half years, the DS is a mere 3.8 million units behind the PS2's 21.9 million sales after 7 and 1/4 years.  This places the DS 17% behind the PS2's sales.  The PS3 on the other hand is currently sitting at 1 million units sold is currently 95% behind the PS2's sales, but since it won't be released for a while, I'll be nice and go ahead and DOUBLE the PS2's current Japanese sales (something which is very unlikely to happen by the release of FFXIII), putting it at 90% the PS2's sales when FFXIII comes out.

Since you are so keen on amount of console sold, let's apply these differentials to the 2 games which are primarily being discussed (Final Fantasy XIII and DQIX).

Dragon Quest VIII sold 3.61 million units in Japan, if we apply the -17% to it (as per your console sales theory) then DQIX will sell about 3 million units.

Final Fantasy XII sold 2.42 million units in Japan, if we apply the -90% to it then FFXIII will sell about 242,000 copies.

Now, we both know this isn't the way things work, and although FFXIII will very likely sell around FFXII's numbers or less, I very much expect DQIX to be the best selling DQ game in history (both in Japan and Worldwide).

Yes Sony will probably steal the show. They have to. I really don't mean this sarcastically: they need some vaporware, Killzone is become real they need more stuff years away to show us the potential for PS3.

Nintendo will be a no-show, but with a key-note. I would be surprised if Nintendo, in 2 hours, can out shine PS3 in 3 days.

FF7 and FFX sold better than the rest, and they were the first on the PS1 and PS2, respectively.  I expect FF13 will do quite well.

Now, I understand your connection with the world of Ivalice, but most successful GBA game of all time?  Huh?  The original PS game sold better...and I'm pretty sure FF12 was a stand-alone game just in the same universe.

And again, FF12 was a different combat style that a lot of people didn't like as much.  FF13 not only returns to form from what I hear, but it looks ridiculously good in the few videos we've seen so far.  It'll do fine.

Anyway, the original argument was that DQ does not Dwarf FF in Japan, it just sells a little better.

I am greatly looking forward to TGS.

1. Were the PS1 and PS2 luke warm failures like the PS3?

2. People were looking forward to the world of FF12 though because of FFTA. I fail to see what comparing FFT to it has anything to do with it as FFT was only ever connected to franchise after the fact. Was FFT on the GBA? So what do you prove by connecting the two? I never said it was the most successful GBA games of all time, just one of them, perhaps you should read a little more carefully next time. Sigh...

In the end all you've managed to do is make yourself look like someone who can't take the time to read. Hell I'll even give you I was a bit over the top of in calling FFTA one of the most successful GBA games of all time, but if semantics is all you can call me on, why did you even bother replying?
