Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How Nintendo Could Counter LBP

First, I feel it necessary to state my built in bias against LBP whenever I mention it.  Yes, I am bitter that it is going to be on a system that I don't own (and won't for a very long time.)

Second, this would never happen and I don't know if I even think it should. It is just an idea I had. Here goes:

Nintedo could release a new 2D Mario for the Wii... with a level editor.

Pros:

It would appease the hardcore (It's mario! With a level editor! Who doesn't want that?)

It would be fairly simple to develop and could make a lot of money.

Because it would be based on an established model, it wouldn't be nearly as complex as LBP. Since you couldn't customize as much, a level could be designed much easier.

Cons:

Nintendo benifits from the (incorrect) assumption that they are not out for their competitors throats. This would be an obviously dirty tactic.

It may make some people feel emnity towards a childhood friend.

Sorry if this has been brought up before. I did search.

This is both a pro and a con?

That sounds like a great idea but, like you, I don't see anything like that happening.

Nintendo probably doesn't even feel threatened by LBP to be honest.

I must say I have no clue what you are refering to.

@Wetcoaster - Yes it is a pro and a con. I think the customization is really cool. It just depends on how dedicated a person may be to creating levels.

Nintendo does not need to counter LBP, because there is nothing in LBP that is new or revolutionary and it doesn't perfect any of the things it does have. It may be a good game, but it will not reach legendary sales figures because it does not appeal to the majority of the market.

The reason why Nintendo does not create level editors is because they are in the games industry and the purpose of a game is to sell copies. The number of people who would seriously use a level editor does not justify the time and effort necessary to create one. Super Mario Galaxy may or may not be a better game, but it will be more profitable than LBP (Sony's development costs are higher and hardware margins lower or negative) and that is all that matters.

Well first off it would be hard for the Wii to do anything like LBP until they fix their storage problem. Until that better then hard drive idea comes out there just isn't the room to do anything like LBP can do.

Secondly they really don't need to worry. Most of the casuals who like LBP already have a Wii. LBP is more to confront the 360 then the Wii. The Wii has plenty of other games that appeal to the same types as LBP and though they are possibly not as good as LBP will be, there are more of them. It's the 360 that doesn't have anything to cater to the market that both the Wii and LBP are going for. The Wii will do just fine until Sony gets the price down to 299 with a LBP bundle.

This would matter if Nintendo was in a position in which it HAD to counter and if LBP was actually gonna cause a huge spike in sales, which I'm still skeptical of. But oh well. I'm buying it first day btw.

Why on earth would the fastest selling console in history need to do something to counter a game on a console that has already seen GTAIV and MGSIV get released without any impact on its sales
