Forums - Sales Discussion - Does anyone still believe PS3 will win the console war?

PS3 competiting with xbox 360, when many multiplatform games run and sold better on xbox 360 imho. and xbox 360 have good friend called PC, where many pc games are easy port to Xbox 360. so PS3 is the lonely one

The PS3 has already won this gen, its the only console on the market. The 360 is competing with PC's, and the wii is competing with the PS2.

VGChartz, I suggest you follow Griffin's lead:

Console/Blu Ray Player sales from 2007

As the only console/Blu Ray player, PS3 is the default winner with 7 million units.

A major victory in an entirely blue ocean, congratulations Sony.

PC sales from 2007

1st place goes to PC, with 255.7 million units

2nd place goes to 360, with 8 million units.

360 just can't seem to catch up.  Rumor has it the new Live update will include Microsoft Office, making 360 more competitive in the workplace.

Wii vs PS2 sales from 2007

A brand new category we just invented, called "Wii vs PS2" just to make sure other sections didn't get too crowded.

1st place goes to Wii, with 17 million units.

2nd place goes to PS2, with 9 million units.

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)
PC: 10^9
Wii: 10^8

I think its too premature to call PS3 out of a win(although it does seem unlikely it'd pass wii at this point) but for all we know this could be only less than 1/3 the way into this cycle. With development costs all ready hard to recoup, I doubt third party publishers would be happy to get on board a new higher spec, specifically if MS went it alone. (They'd say no thanks and continue making multi-plat PS3/360) I think MS is stuck waiting on and making a system with similar spec to Sony's - and will be unable to go it alone if they want full third party support. Thus Sony will be able to extend this gen, which they will as it seems like they're the best poised for this type of situation. MS has enough ground to continue with 360 and be profitable, Nintendo the same. Saying a 10 year cycle is completely ludicrous at this point may come back and bite you.

If a new console does arrive it will most likely be based on new controller tech, and not so much on higher graphic capabilities, this is a HUGE risk and i could see them waiting awhile on it for that reason.

I Still think Sony is not as 'stupid' in their business decisions as people are thinking just because a $400-$600 Playstation didn't destroy it's cheaper competitors. As the price goes down, I think Sony will catch more momentum going forward and the cost difference between ps3 and its competitors (to produce) will narrow. We still haven't seen what happens when the ps3 is at a mass-market price, only the wii has been there.

Console sales predictions: Wii takes the gold medal with 140 million sales. PS3 takes the silver medal with 100 million sales. 360 gets the bronze medal with 42 million sales.

Another reason the PS3 will at least beat the 360 is the strength of their game libraries. The 360 went from having what was believed to be the strongest game lineup on the market to a point where its game library is considered to be at best no better than the PS3's. Recent games that have received subpar reviews have contributed to this as well as the fact that recently PS3 versions of the same games have been receiving higher review scores than the 360 versions. The first big blow to the perception of the 360's game libraries' strength was the failure of Ninja Gaiden II to live up to expectations generated by the success of the first one followed upon by the critical failure of Too Human.

Combine that with the fact that even though the 360 has had many more jrpgs than the PS3 thus far and that jrpgs have made up the bulk of the 360's exclusive lineup in recent months, and there are many 360 fans that love to point out on internet forums that the 360 has been getting all of the rpgs in recent months and they will jump up in down with glee if you agree with  them on that point, and if you say to them 360's appeal is mainly to people that prefer western types of games and shooters even though the reason they bought the console in the first place was in order to play Western shooters like Halo and Gears; jrpgs don't sell well on the 360, they will act offended.  The fact is the audience for jrpgs isn't really there on the 360, and the Playstation family is still viewed as the proper home for jrpgs.

An example Persona 3 on Playstation 2 has smoked all of the 360's jrpgs in terms of critical reception. Also Blue Dragon and Tales of Vesperia on 360 both failed to sell 100,000 units in their first week on the market in the US and a game like Lost Odyssey took several months to reach the million seller mark; however, these same games would get a much better critical reception on PS3 and sell many more copies than the 360 versions worldwide.

Ps.     I decided to do some research on the above statement.  Persona 3 FES has sold more copies than either Tales of Vesperia or Inifinite Undiscovery.  Both of which had to have been more hyped than Persona 3.  Blue Dragon having been on the market for a much longer time than either of these three games is only at the 500,000 mark in worldwide sales.  And while Lost Odyssey has often been called a Final Fantasy rival, it is certainly not selling at the pace that Final Fantasy games do.  Finally while it is true that Tales did much better than Disgaea 3 on the PS3 in its first week, the margin was much smaller in both games second week, and in the third week Disgaea 3 sales were greater than those of Tales of Vesperia even though Vesperia was both much more hyped and received slightly higher review scores than Disgaea 3.

PPS.  Lost Odyssey still hasn't sold 1 million copies worldwide.  It is still only at .82 million according to its game profile here at VGChartz.

My most anticipated games:  Whatever Hideo Kojima is going to do next, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake, Wii Sports Resort.  Cave Story Wiiware.

The enlightenment ! PS3 is alone on the market.

Anyhow it is a bit true ... the 360 is focused on a more mature audience (I don't understand the move of MS with the new avatars ...) and receive a lot of exclusivity via the PC world  while PS3 remains a more traditional gaming plateform (more Blue-Ray, less internet). In my environment, old boy play the 360 (with a strong focus on online gaming) while kids (10-15) play the PS3 (don't shoot at me, this is what I observed).

I say the PS3 has some pretty good chance to catch up on the long term, but won't be dominate the next gen market .. it is already too late for Sony.

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

hahhaha this is the best post ever hahahhhaha and even funnier is that some of the statements are true

Glad I avoided this thread like the plague.

Turned into a Grade-A shitstorm.

Go PS3!

The wii will absolutely win. If there is something we should have learned from wiis success it is that this is not a business driven by technology, which is why the ps3 won't win in the long end even if it's technologically best.

The PS3's not winning??? ahhhhh (where's the emoticon for running around with my head on fire?)

Anyways, top seller it will not be, just like Gruyère will never outsell Velvetta in the trailer park...
