Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Square Enix does it Again! West gets censored version of DQIV

A big stink for hardcore DQ fans, 'Party Talk' a feature that allowed you to communicate between members in your party has been removed in the Western release of Dragon Quest IV. This apparently contains nearly 50% of the game dialogue including much of the character "moe" that endeared this game to its Japanese fans.

Not the end of the World but why did we have to get a gimped version of this game?

ermmm....I don't doubt the veracity of your claims...but,

Linky?

How is it Square's fault? Maybe they HAD to for some reason? o_o

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

With the ESRB?  There's no excuse.  Before ESRB, it was understandable since games were thought as kids toys back then.

apparently quite a bit has been taken out of the US release of Dragon Quest IV included nearly half the original dialogue and much of the weapons, towns and conversations have been retranslated. Apparently the game and humor has been dumbed down greatly. It's hard to make out all else what has been removed or gimped, but it seems to be certain features taken out of the game too. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable of the subject matter could fill us in on the details.

All I know this has become a big stink for western fans

Thanks Square, you can't even do remakes right anymore... I'm just glad I stopped expecting anything out of them as a developer after FFX.

Party talk was taken out. The retranslation was to fit the new names that began with DQVIII.

Well Cactus it is rather dissapointing none the less.

The people in Chapters 1-4 were given accents (Scottish, Russian, Irish, French) which IMO adds to the charm of the game.

The weapons, monsters, and attacks were given the retranslated names that Square implemented first in DQVIII

Party talk was taken out, which I'm not happy about, but in no way has the actual game been dumbed down.

I'm only on Chapter 4 of 5, so this list may not be complete.

SE is a lame company, they focus more on rehashes and ports plus they hate the Wii. Just look at Soul Eater, got destroyed by reviews.

You do know the only review is by Famitsu right? And you also know that Famitsu bases its reviews on community hype and not if they liked it or not right?

What are you trying to do, make him melt? You know truth and facts are the bane of his existence.

I know at least one thing they have changed: the crosses in the tombs and churches. They have changed it back into the Nes era. They look like some sort of cactus (with the arms curved up).
