Forums - Microsoft Discussion - "Im a PC! Got a problem with that?": New Microsoft advertisements kick off.

I understand the point of the ads is to show : "This is Windows, which is still used by 95% of regular folks around the world, and you got a problem with that?" Well what it fails to point out is that most of those regular folks don't have a choice anyway, that is what you call MONOPOLY. Having said that I still think that Apple has shown more monopolistic tendencies then even Microsoft.

People still have a choice... Linux/Mac/Windows/Other. Its not like they are compelled by law to own a Windows PC. Its like people are acting like Windows is as closed off as the PS3 is to outside software.

People still have a choice..

The bulk of high profile modern computer software is Windows exclusive, Apple Mac is still a viable option for newbies. Sad although Microsoft works heavily against easy portability towards other systems, the bulk of PC software is still high level easily portable software.

For a platform like Amiga, all odds are against it. It's such a fun OS to use, but the amount of time and effort required to re-engineer PC hardware drivers and try to re-architect very un-Amiga-like software for the ultra efficient but barebones AmigaOS are enormous challenges.

First of all, I didn't come out with the ad, Microsoft did.

I never said you did.

Hell, Apple's tactic takes it one step further.  They spend all their ad time criticizing the competition instead of actually saying what their product does.

Every Apple ad has a theme. It talks about setup time, ease of use, there store copying your windows files over for you, etc. Each ad touches on one aspect of what Apple products or services can do for you. It's what an ad should do. Find me one ad that Apple has made about the Mac that does not address some functionality.

While you may not find Microsoft's ads clever or funny in any way, I think they are taking the high road.  They're talking about their own product, not making fun of the other ones and spreading total lies.

Explain to me what part of Microsoft's product this commercial talks about.

Linux fanboys, windows fanboys, macosx fanboys and now... amigaos fanboys.

Man, we could start a freak circus venture.

How can you complain about them? They are cuter than kittens!!!

@ocnkng:

Sure Apple wants to keep the monopoly or a strict control of its HW/SW combination niche, but that's all, they don't want to own the world. iPod itself, despite being the single most successful portable media player in the world, is very far from being a monopolist and has NOT MANDATORY DRM and much less intrusiv and limitinge than MS' one.

If any sort of fanboyism is worst than the console ones, it is Mac fanatism. It is quite amusing watching a raging Mac fanatic flailing his arms trough the air and explaining me why Macs are better for graphic design, while i occasionaly take stab at him... good times.

I keep hearing this argument. When I hear from an Apple fan, I always hear about what the product can do. It's functionality and it's capability. When I hear someone counter that, it's by putting down the person saying these things.

I can only imagine why that's the angle one must take when combating a knowledgeable Apple fan ;)

P.S. Linux vs Mac augments go very different. Linux fans have an OS they can actually defend.

I guess AmigaOS could anyway have a restart easier than Linux in its early years, as now, with the source code available, it could have OOo, Gimp, and so on, a complete set of indispensable SW tools. And there is Wine too that could plug holes in the same measure it does for other OS'.

What AmigaOS really needs, IMVHO, is to market its exclusive features as effectively as Apple does with its own, and if they are different enough from Apple ones, it could bite another chunk off Windows share of the pie. Just don't let Ballmer know your plans too early, his reaction could kill you all. With laughs. Or with chairs.

MikeB, amigaos fanboys were not singled out.

As far as apple being for newbies, laffo. Sure it's way more user friendly than linux or windows but below the high level API's there's an unix compliant kernel. As for why would one knowledgeable user chose mac os x over linux, that'd be an entire new thread.

edit: by the way, that's an apple keyboard next to your amigaos box.

I think you misunderstood me, AmigaOS4.x needs to attract more users. Although AmigaOS is very user friendly it works different from what usual people are used to. You can perform the bulk of tasks people do on a Windows PC, but you have to know where to look. It's not like a newbie can walk into a random store and ask questions, call a local support team, etc. You talk to the devs online at specific websites, you usually download your (sometimes still beta) software from the internet at specific websites (stuff which comes out of the box with MacOS or Windows).

What I am saying, the current circumstances do not allow AmigaOS to be an OS suitable for newbies. Windows and MacOS are, IMO Linux isn't neither for a variety of similar and different reasons.

Availability of software and maturity might be an issue too and not just for newbies.
