Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Will the Xbox 360 have a 10 year lifecycle?

We all know the Xbox life was cut tragically  short but the 360 is a whole new system.  Everyone is talking about Sony and the PS3 10 year lifecycle.  Well Xbox 360 has been out since March 2005 and has been strong for the first 3 years and in its 4th year has postioned itself well to keep going strong with solid pricing and strong first party and thrid party support.

1) Development costs for both PS3 and 360 were high and probably will make either slow down and try to make as much money as possible on their current gen system

2) With updates availlable by internet such as the complete revamp of live coming in November they can extend the life of the console.

3) Sony's PS3 losts tons of money so Sony will not be launching a new system any time soon which gives MS the ability to ride the 360 without having to worry about Sony launching first.

I personally do not see the 360 making it 10 years but close.  The rumors are system announcing 2010 launching 2011-2012.  That puts 360 at 6-7 years plus 1-2 after new console launch making it 7-8 year life cycle.

Whats your opinion?

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

Most likely 2010/11, the new box comes out and they still support the old one.

I can definitely see the 360 lasting ten years, perhaps even more.
MS has lost too much money on hardware to not keep the 360 around for that length of time. pumping out a new console with new tech too soon would just be crazy.
It would be best IMO for MS (and Sony for the same reason) to keep their current consoles around as long as they reasonably can.

Did you try to copy and paste some words in from Microsoft Word or some other word processor? You can fix your original post by clicking 'Edit' then simply clicking on 'Post' again. It works most of the time.

We'll be in a much better position to discuss the potential lifetime of the 360 after it's preformance this holiday season. I think it could well last 6-7 years before Microsoft unveil a new console. I'm not sure if it has the brand strength to continue selling for 10 years. Also Microsoft don't have the first party clout of Nintendo or Sony to sustain the console, so can they continue to purchase exclusives down the line?

I don't think the Wii will even last 10 years.

10 year life cycle for X360 lol. I think April Fool's Day was over 5 months ago.
To be honest X360 will last between 5 to 6 years. When new XBox is introduced X360 would be phased out within 12 to 18 months.

No, a 10 year console life cycle is bad for gamers...

We need new more powerful consoles with games that do more quicker...

The idea of this is good for business bad for gamers.

None of the current consoles will have a 10 year lifecycle.
