As of today (20081103). John McCain essentially has Barrack Obama right where he wants him. All McCain needs to do is win Pennsylvania, where McCain is currently trailing by only 6 points, and run the board on all of the toss-up states.

The last Gallup Poll shows Obama up nationally by 11%. If you factor in the Bradley effect (-8%) that puts Obama up by 3%. The MOE (margin of error) of the poll is +/- 3%, so we essentially have a dead even race. Traditionally Republicans are more likely to vote than Democrats, so it looks like McCain has this one in the bag. Obama could pull off a big upset but he would have to win states like NY, CA and MA, where he is currently polling only slightly ahead of McCain. Whoever your candidate of choice is, please go vote. Every election is a piece of history. Participate.

Dates to look forward to:

New poll by SurveyUSA had Obama up by +4 in Virginia. Looks like that state will still be pretty competitive. Florida is most likely going to McCain. Ohio will be a tough battle, but right now I would call it for McCain.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

If McCain loses Florida or Ohio he doesnt have a chance. If he wins these states, he is going to have to hold on to very close swing states like Coloroda, New Mexico, and Virginia in order to win.

hey fkusumot...the electoral-vote link you posted goes to a specific day...Sept 11, 2008.  You should change it the the index page.  And in case you didn't know...

I update it when there are changes to the tally.

Whoops. Okay, I fixed that. So it still looks like Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico are going to figure heavily into this election. I guess that's why both candidates are spending money on Spanish-language political ads.

I was surprised today when McCain said that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong". Wut?

lol...gotta love the political spin.

What I'm looking forward to most after this election is over is that point when either President-to-be stands up and says:

"Hey guys....life sucks....the economy sucks....it's really bad...it's not my fault....it can only get better."

Because then we will know for sure exactly how bad the picture is.  Right now they're trying to sell us on hope and promise and we know it's just a bunch of malarky to get us to vote for them.  I want the fricking facts, now.  Stop filling our heads with propoganda.  The economy has been in the shitter for over a decade and all that's held it up was a dot-com bubble, a stock market surge, and a housing bubble.

And now they've all gone bust.

Ok..we've got it; now give it to us straight.  Where do we go from here?

No, our economy is fucked for awhile anyway you look at it.

McCain will win Florida, Missouri and Nevada. It will come down to Ohio, Virginia and Colorado. If he is going to win the election, Mccain will have to win all three of those states. Two of these states are traditionally Republican (Colorado and Virginia) and one is soft Republican (Ohio), He cannot afford a 269-269 tie as the House would indubitably elect Obama and the Senate would elect Biden.

This is my favorite poll tracking site as it allows you to manipulate the EC map: http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/poll-tracker.htm

Obama has a good chance in Nevada and a great chance in Colorado.

this - the fundamentals of our economy are strong

In 1932, in the midst of his re-election campaign (while running against a brilliant, progressive candidate with amazing oratorical ability - Franklin Delano Roosevelt), Herbert Hoover looked at the public with an absolutely straight face and said that the economy was sound and it would soon get better. The best prescription Hoover felt was needed was to cut taxes and put more money into the pockets of the rich and their corporations, even as he suggested this would be a fundamental change of governance. Sound familiar?

And yet folks will vote for him. Like sheep to the slaughter. Or Jim Jones followers on the Kool-Aid. Not I, said the cat.

Oh yeah, I love electoral vote site. It rocks. I used it last election.
