The new 80 GB PS3 is watered down it DOES not have an emotion engine chip and therefor limited campatability. Because of this and the fact that 60 and 80 GB HD cost the same to produce means that the New 600 dollar PS3 is cheaper to produce than the 60GB.

It makes sense for them to discontinue the 60GB model sell off its stock at a 100 dollar discount and have only the 80GB model left and than introduce another price cut to 500 later this year to bump sales again.

If that's the case and they are also discontinuing the 60GB, the 'price drop' will actually be a value DECREASE if they keep the 80GB model at $599 once the 60GB's are gone. An upgrade from 60GB to 80GB is costing sony PENNIES, and is more than offset by the removal of the emotion engine (if that's true)

Which is exactly why they are doing it. They introduce a cheaper model at the full price wiht a small upgrade in HD to entice consumers while they sell out there remaining system stock at the lower SKU price. The make the money back with the new SKU and even though they lose money on the old SKU they increase their user base through the inital spike after the price cut and the 10% increase in monthly sales afterwords. Then they can drop teh price for real to 499 later and see another spike on a cheaper to make system.

OH and they did remove the EE from the 80 GB on the Box there is a limited compatability warning.

Wow... screw the consumer. Sony just continues to spew BS. Why can't they just be honest? That sucks, because I would have concidered a PS3 in a few years when the price REALLY drops, now I just can't do it.

Both sides are right

At launch

Buy a PS3 for $499!!
or
Buy a PS3 for $599!!

Now

Buy a PS3 for $499!!
or
Buy a PS3 for $599!!

This is how the people that are saying there is no cut is seeing things, and they do to some extent have a point.

Buy a PS3 for $499 with WIFI and a 60gb HD Marked down from $599!!
or
Buy a PS3 for $599 with a 80GB HD and MOTORSTORM New Hotness!!

This is how the people arguing there was a price drop see's things. They also have a point to some extent.

This is the perfect, and I mean perfect material for an eternal debate. Absolutely perfect. Both sides can defend their view adequately. Please. Just drop this, its not that big a deal, and there are enough threads on it already. Noone can prove anyone else wrong, because both sides are equally right and wrong.

I don't care if they sell it for only $200. Until they actually come out with a game I want to play that is only available on the PS3, I won't be buying one. I buy a gaming console to play games, and the XBox 360 and Wii have all the great games already covered.

That is how i fell on this matter, They Can just keep droping the price but untell there is a soemthing that makes me Say WOW this thing will make my gaming experencie worth the Money.

This post may be off the current Emotion chip discussion sorry guys to but in the middle with no word on thet.

But i fill like if you stop making something and then Drop the Price is not like a real price Cut its sorda a END Of Shelf Life Item. Becouse it was $599 yesterday They stop producing it and then drop the price, As they not make any more of them then it is a legit reason for the price Drop and not really lable it as one, Becouse once the $499 systems go away in 9 months or how ever long it may take then we are back at Square 1 With a price tg of $599 right where we are now.

well this may be explaned earler in this thread but 2 pages is to much to read on this topic.

From what i see is, I think Sony is planning another price cut later in the year, probably right around the time GTA comes out(maybe later), They've kept the 599$ SKU so that consumers can see the day of the new price cut(and maybe a few weeks after), youll see $599 marked down to $399 - Which most people would think is a steal. You see $499 to $399, isn't as drastic, people will buy in alot more when they think they're getting a great deal(what if 360 jumps 100 as well, then really doesn't make the price cut anything at all and 360 probably will if PS3 drops price). Pretty clear thats part of the reason why its not selling for $550 like it should be sold at - considering what you get. This is about the time when the 5 free Blu ray special for PS3 will come to end as well(it will atleast give the 500$ buyers something).
Also makes sense to me why I havn't seen any PS3 adds advertising the new price cut, like they should be doing, because really they stand to benefuit from the average consumer thinking its still $600 if a second price cut comes.

Whatever. There are better games overall on the PS3 right now than the Wii. The PS3's game drought ended this month but the Wii hasn't had a significant release since Super Paper Mario.

Anyway, it's a price-cut for the version that consumers preferred, according to Sony. It's funny how people will pick and choose when they want to use Sony quotes.

Edit:  Super Stardust HD alone is worth $500.  Heh.

Sqrl,

Stop playing with the word "fact" as It was a holy word.
The FACT is that the PS3 20gb, which laked a lot of things, is not anymore sold since months, so u cannot say that just before the price drop, the PS3 price was 499$. IT WAS NOT.
Now we are after price drop, and YES, now the complete PS3 (even with the real EE) can be bought for 499$ only,
That is the fact.
Nevertless, I agree, Sony marketing was crap and I agree that they have made this move to boost the 60gb previous model that is stocked on retailers all over NA.

That'll be what's put on the PS3's tombstone, "Metacritic says this system had the better games..."

Again, personal opinion is personal opinion. We've already establish in previous debates that reviews are not an objective measure of a game's worth and to use them as such is just childish justification after the fact. The only factor that matters to a console or game's success is its sales. You can cry about having the better games all you want but the fact of the matter is, you can't prove it beyond a Reviewer's opinion and in the end it doesn't help the PS3 one bit except in justifying its laggard market state in your own mind. Metacritic and Reviewers are just a factor in matterial to bottom line which you cling to in your desperate search for reasons to say the PS3 is better.

Even after the PS3 is long dead (should that ever be the case) we'll still have to listen to you die hards cry about how great it was and how much better the games were.

If the games are great I don't care how much it sells. The only reason I care about sales is there is a greater chance for great games.

If the great games keep coming, I don't care.

Reviews are the best way to see if the games are great for a system and will continue to be the best way to determine that. If you like the game types that have highly rated games, you will like the system. Simple as that.

Trying to tell me you like you system more because more people have bought it doesn't mean much.

So, really, the situation has only gotten worse since launch. As an aside, you realise the PS3 is selling for $852 in the UK? And no price driop either.

Ubuntu. Linux for human beings.

If you are interested in trying Ubuntu or Linux in general, PM me and I will answer your questions and help you install it if you wish.

ROTFLMBO ... folks, all you have to do is ... study Sony history. They are just running their standard playbook. If something is underperforming, lie about it, tout how awesome it is doing, and 'orphan' it. I can think of a few products - the PS2 Linux Kit, the PS2 mouse and keyboard, the PS2 Hard drive (remember that?), the UMD ... MiniDisc, BetaMax. Not to say M$ hasn't released duds (Windows ME - what was that crap?!) - Windows CE - MSN TV - but look at the charts - how long has the 360 been out - and without a price cut? Sony smelled the blood in the water and ... yelled 'Man Overboard!' Seriously - how else to you explain the price cut - on the B$3 and the Blu-Ray standalone players? They are getting KILLED - and want to drum up interest.

It's gonna take more than $100 and 5 *free*, rather lame Blu-Ray movies to get me out of my seat. And guess what? The clearance sale is until all of the 60gb models are sold. Then ... it's back to $599 for the 80gb version.

For a company losing money, MS hasn't had to lower the price of the 360 ONCE - nor have they dropped their $299 SKU - the core.

Sony wants folks to think they are getting a good deal. I guess they are, but when you can get an HD-DVD player for $199 ... hmmmm ... I dunno ...

There was only one SKU I wanted ... the 20gb PS3 with hardware emulation. Now? The current PS3s have software emulation, making it of less value to me. I don't know who stated it, but I agree - I want to game, not play Blu Ray movies - not find the cure to cancer via my console - and definitely not *wait* to see games with potential. If I wanted to wait, I would pick up several savings bonds, not a console ...

And the Wii? You wanna know why it's selling like hotcakes? It's a new way to game. Yeah, the graphics suck, but it's just fun to play. The Wii sports game is crack ... it's exercise - it never gets old parkin' a homer or whipping a fool in the ring.

Sony doesn't have a clue about winning this war - price cuts, clearance sales ... am I looking for games or just hanging out at KMart?

Too bad folks are getting duped into thinking this fire sale is a great deal. People, especially B$3 fanboys can say what they want ___________ (choose your expression, please - Metal Gear and GT will PWN all! - or - Lair and Warhawk will move systems - or - @Home is so gonna ROCK! - or - PSN network is free ... and much, much better than Xbox Live) but a price cut/clearance sale - giving away 5 *lame-o* Blu Ray flicks and dropping SKUs are the best way to insure you start off dead last in the next gen of gaming.

4 words sum up the B$3 for me ...

Giant Crab!

and ...

RIDGE RACER!!!!!!!
