Forums - Sales Discussion - Xbox 360 > PS3 in August. Is it a sign of things to come?

Retrasado said:

no, it won't, but in any case, a PS3 price drop will have a greater effect than a 360 price drop because the PS3 is more expensive.

Also, stickball, there's no way the 360 is going to beat PS3 sales by 500000 in December alone. Last year, when the PS3 was selling waaaaaaaay less in NA, the 360 sold 412000 more units in NA then the PS3.

May I ask what's changed between December 2007 and September 2008 that would allow the Playstation 3 to close the gap by a large margin? I'd really like to see some Sony fanpeople answers using hard facts & numbers rather than just attack my logic by saying "no it won't"

Here's the way I look at it:

December 2007 Catalyst Information:

  • Xbox 360 price drop occurred 4 months before December (early August), 10% price reduction (on Arcade)
  • Playstation 3 price drop occurred roughly 1 and 1/2 months before December (mid October), 20% price reduction
  • Halo 3 (largest X360 software title) launched 2 months before December
  • Playstation 3 had no uber-exclusive to drive sales

December 2008 Catalyst Information:

  • Xbox 360 price drop occurred 3 months before December (early September), 30% price reduction (on Arcade)
  • Playstation 3 - No price drop (assumption)
  • Fable 2 & Banjo Kazooie (largest exclusive software titles) launch 1-2 months before December
  • Resistance 2 and LBP (largest exclusive software titles) launch 1-2 months before December

Now, with those comparisons, I am not understanding how, without a price drop, Sony is going to be able to compete during Christmas. Could someone care to tell me why and how the average consumer is going to snatch up a $400 gaming system vs. a $200 one, that would put them on an equal (or near equal) selling level?

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Its only a 10k lead in a month with a

1. Price drop
2. Too Human
3. Tales of Vesperia

Your meaning to tell me 10 thousand people didn't buy the system for one of those three reasons?

If anything, the 360 should have outsold the PS3 by an even larger margin.

I agree but to be fair a win is a win but we'll see what happens between now and Jan 1

 1. The Price Drop was not in August, but in September so those sales are not included in these figures.

2. I would not classify Too Human and Tales as Vesperia (niche games) as system sellers.

3. September has Infinite Undiscovery and Starwars Force Unleasded (both Systems) <------should be interesting.

I guess the MGS4 effect is starting to die down (2-3 Months).

PS360 - Best of Both Worlds

Really, these falls sales don't mean a whole lot in the long run. Nobody is going to remember what happened in these months.

Oct-Dec is when the real action occurs. Holiday sales >>>>> Fall sales.

August is a slow month.

Only hardware that came out was Too Human and Madden.

Did you expect PS3s to sell crazy good without a game?

And why did the Wii sold like crazy? It didn't had a good game release.

This thread has what to do with the Wii?

I would answer the question, but there's no reason to, since this thread is talking about the PS360.

Why bring the Wii into this thread?

So fucking annoying.

The margin of victory was too small to have significance sales-wise, however it does give Microsoft something to brag about. September 360 will lead by a higher margin, but I expect October through December to be at least neck and neck, if not PS3 leading.

Actually it's not even going to be close not at these price point anyway. The only real possible chance is October, but Nov and Dec, neh eh. Price point is going to be so very key and considering the PS3 will be the same price point as last October I see no reason why that would even remotely happen with a $199 starting price for the 360, unlike last fall and we all know what happened last Nov and Dec.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

TOV are only counted for 4 days, so i think TOV could be on September NPD

But we must also remember the Blu-ray Factor.

The priced of HD sets are going to be down and  there is NO HD DVD /confusion this holiday season.  I think that will help Sony sell PS3s even without a price drop.

Plus the PS3 will have a better selection of games than it did last year.

I think it will be neck and neck for the ps3 & 360, with the Wii killing them both (if there is no shortages).

PS360 - Best of Both Worlds

For the PS3 to be selling this many units at 399, is quite a feat. The Xbox 360 this month had ToV and Too Human. The PS3 is championing out a huge amount of sales while having supply issues.
