Any predictions on the PS3/360 battle for September? It's safe to say that 360 will win the month, even if the price cut bounce lasts only a week or two. But by how much? Could PS3 really lose North America by 100k in September? More?

It's becoming apparent that the "Year of the PS3" does not really apply to the U.S. Or Japan, even. Europe, perhaps.

360 may still outsell PS3 for the year in North America with price difference heading into holidays unless Little Big Planet moves a pretty big number of consoles. In my opinion, that's the only real system seller that is unique to either platform - meaning without a counterpart on the other system (Gears 2 being roughly equalled by Resistance 2, for example, in terms of generating new console sales.)

Wow. Madden did beastly on the 360 and PS3. Wii ... not so much.

Hardware has Wii winning by a large margin, as usual.

But the shocker is definitely 360 > PS3. I didn't see that coming.

Judging from the closeness of the two, I would take a guess and say the PS3 was going to outsell the 360 for August, but the clearance price on the 20GB helped push the 360 ahead in the tail end of the month to squeak out a win.

Next month should be interesting! Last two NPD's have been surprises in one fashion or another. Keep on keeping on!

As I said in the news thread, it is interesting that two of the three biggest differentials in software sales were on the Wii.

And as myself and others have pointed out before -- NPD does not get data from Wal-Mart or Toys R Us ... two big Wii sellers. Thus, its estimates may not be as good as VGChartz estimates for Wii software.

Also, given that NPD seems to sometimes fudge numbers to make up differences, that may also explain MK Wii -- which VGC had 50k higher than NPD in July.

The biggest shocker was definitely 360>PS3
Other shockers are how Wii Maddeb was severly overtracked,and how MKWii was undertracked,so I'm happy and angry with that.
Wii>360+PS3 wasn't that big of a suprise,I though that those two would have been above Wii this month since it didn't have any big releases.
Next month Wii should do around 700k,maybe even 800k.Then in October another 7-800k in November 1.6 milion and then in December 3.2 million.

Wow, disappointed in this thread. Wake up this morning hoping for some Epicness, but none to be seen... When I saw the numbers, was hoping for some good action but wrong I was.

In short, 360>PS3 was no flame bait at all (the difference is indeed small). No 360 people gloating and the PS3 guys just blew it off and changed the subject to Madden Wii and the "out of nowhere" claim that "Wii will never be a PS2".

Guess these is really the slow sales period affecting even the members of sales site...

OT: good job VG on your numbers. Wii still dominating but pretty steep decline nonetheless (games, we need games...). Tight HD battle very interesting. And SW is Madden + Wii legs. All in all, not very exciting indeed.

You do know that Madden 08 on PS2 outsold Madden 08 on every system except for the 360 version, right? The PS2 version last year handily outsold the Wii + PS3 versions combined of Madden 08.

Shouldn't DMJ be the one citing posts of people claiming Madden Wii > Madden 360?

I do remember plenty of "with good legs Madden Wii stands a chance to outsell Madden PS3 in the long run" but no Madden Wii > Madden 360. Maybe they exist as you always find some crazy fanboys from any side with stupid expectations but they would be far from the zeitgeist.

As for the PS3>360 I do not remember it being the zeitgeist either as PS3 fans did seem to edge their bet in the same way by avoiding  talking in the absolute (except DMJ at the beginning of this thread but he seemed to be joking so if he was it doesn't count).

Of course I could be wrong about either or both as I do not have the time (or willingness) to read all posts.

Fair enough, and the Madden Wii > Madden PS3 are quiet which is not surprising as the PS3's rising sales versus the Wii's stagnating one make it all the more unlikely for the Wii one to beat it even with legs.

Now can you show us where the Madden Wii > Madden 360 you claimed existed were at because if they do they need to get some major crow dished out as it wasn't going to happen in any case.

I'm not trying to say that NPD is wrong, but they really are working at a disadvantage not having Walmart sales.

Cue the anecdotal evidence police.... First it is sad I have been in Walmart this much lately, but I have watched a few cycles of the following: Madden All Play gets in stock and is placed in the Madden display. It is sold out and replaced with NCAA All play hoping to catch unsuspecting consumers off guard (unfortunately it probably works), then they get another stock that lasts a few days. All the while the other versions are always in stock (maybe they just get more/ bigger shipments of them, but that would be a problem in itself) and they even have more stock behind the glass with the rest of the games.
