Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony Hypes January Sales

I wonder how Virtua Figher 5 will do here in North America, it's doing horrible in Japan now... :o Damnit Nintendo, bring over that Bleach fighting game so we have an "exclusive" fighter too! ;)

Euclid - I thought the same thing, I don't believe that closing the gap means "We only got outsold by 10%" I understand what everyone else said but it feels like a cope (sp?) out. Shams - Your in denial, console sales mean everything! Without a BIG sizeable market , developers will not make PS3 exclusives. They will either opt out for multiplatforms, Wii exclusive or 360 exclusive. The decent games your talking about may not come.

exactly. the PSP is agonizingly close to DS in JAN (within 10%) however u already have VF 5 +march madness..........so 244k without games (excepting RESISTANCE) is commendable nevertheless. ps3 takes complete control from MARCH onwards..........everybody would agree with that

Finally, someone who agrees with me. Thanks gebx for bringing some common sense to these forums! What you said is dead on. I am actually kinda shocked that more people didn't find this 'closing the gap' comment total BS and a huge spin on words.

@washimul What happens in March that turns sony's fortunes arround? @vanguardian1 You would have thought that VF5 would have done REALLY well in Japan since the PS3 really doesn't have any other good games out right now (other than resistance...). The same thought leads me to believe it should do good in NA, but who knows after what happened in Japan.

shams said: Well, lets compare the figures to Jan 2006 for a minute. Firstly - 5 week reporting season - so take 20% off *everything* (console sales, software sales, etc..). Jan 2006 - 360 sold 270k (now sold 265k) - same. Jan 2006 - PS2 sold 317k (now sold 270k) - down by about 15%. Jan 2006 - DS sold 177k (now sold 230k) - up by 30% adjusted. Jan 2006 - PSP sold 208k (now sold 204k) - the same. (no comparison for Wii or PS3, as they weren't out then). ... So the only console to show "adjusted" rises for the matching period 12 months ago - is the DS. Lets just wait until Pokemon DS comes out, and see what happens to the sales. (I am actually surprised - firstly that the DS *did* pick up based on last year, and that last year the PSP outsold it in the same period! Sony are going BACKWARDS with the PSP, not forwards). ... As for "its a pity that the DS still outsells it only because mainly games of the 2005 as Brain..." - for a system to sell well, the titles have to appeal to a wide audience. Its not about selling 20 games to 10 million people, its about selling 2-3 games to 100-million people. Wait for Pokemon, Brain Training II, Dragon Quest, FFXII - and a few surprises.
Big error .If you sell only 3-4 titles to 100 million ,and those 3-4 titles are by Nintendo by the way ,the industry goes to hell .It is way better for the industry to sell 300 games to 100 million that to have 3-4 titles around 25 million sold all all of them of the hardware manufacturer .

As it's been said, you can't say that the PSP's demand is going to exceed the DS Lite's when you need just as much of a miracle to find a DS Lite as you do a Wii at this point. To date I believe 4 3rd party DS Lite titles have hit 1 million+ sales. Dragon Quest Monster Joker alone keeps going on and off the Japanese charts due to the fact that the cartridges aren't being produced quickly enough, if it had a plentiful supply it may have been able to reach near 2 million sales by now.

Common sense ??? It's in the article
PSP is closing the gap on the leading competitor, off just over 10% in total sales for the month.
Whoever wrote the article (not sony because it is not in quotes) thinks they are closing the gap. If you don't know what is happening in March take your pick and Google "PS3 Europe" or "PS3 game releases".

Go to .http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/news/?id=15299. The article is from Sony. It says, "PSP is closing the gap on the leading competitor, off just over 10% in total sales for the month. " From this we know for a fact that they are talking about the DS because of the whole 10% wording.

What are you freakn' kidding me!? Sony will have a big boost in March 600k - 800k. That's it. It's too expensive. Mass market is not going to buy the PS3. Example, I can go out and buy a 46" Sony Bravia LCD for $3000 or so, arguable one of the best tv's on the market. 1080p, 6000 contrast, cable card slot, etc. OR I can go to Walmart and buy a 46" Polaroid crap TV for $900. 1080i, 2000 contrast, etc. Sony's is by far a more sophisticated and visually better TV. However, I garauntee you if you could look up thier sales numbers the Polaroid is outselling it 5:1. The mass market doesn't buy 'best' it buys 'reasonably good and cheapest rate'. That's what is happening here. DS and PSP, which is more powerfull, which can do better graphics and better screens and more media, etc. PSP. Which has sold the most. DS. Wii/360/PS3 is the same scenario. Wii is a really good video game machine at a much lower price point. It has the appeal of non-gamers and old schoolers. The trend is happening right now. worldwide averaging 1m in sales per month. 360 didn't do that. PS3 definately won't. Why? The masses don't care as much about what's the 'best' only whats 'reasonably good at cheapest rate'. Wii is the only mass market home console. 360 is close, when they drop the price in March or June it will be. PS3 won't be for a couple of years, when the manufacturing costs enable it to come down to the $300 range.
