Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony Hypes January Sales

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Explain it to me then.

euclid - you are a little confused. prior to JAN the DS was outselling the PSP by 100,000 units. In JAN the DS outsold the PSP by 30,000 or 70,000 less. That means the "gap" or the amount that the DS is outselling the PSP per month has been greatly reduced from 100,000 to 30,000. Not the 'gap' or the amount that DS has sold over all. Two different gaps. The gap being referred to in the article is the difference per month, not overall.

Thank you superchunk! If that is indeed what the article meant, then they did not word it very clearly at all. Could it be that sony was refering to the GBA (like the other poster said)?

Yup, typical "expected" Sony marketing speak. That's the beauty of stats - its always possible to turn the numbers in your favour. As for closing the gap - the same way that the PS3 is "closing the gap" on the 360 (i.e. not at all). Lets not forget that Jan was a FIVE-WEEK reporting season. Hence the improvement year-on-year for most systems. The only big surprise is the weak DS sales - but if the console was sold out (as reported) for a couple of weeks, it would explain it. And if Rachet and Clank is so good - where is it in the charts?

It's definitely referring to the DS. DS sales are a little weaker than normal, and PSP sales are stronger than normal. PSP is closing in on the DS...that's all it meant.

Well Sony has to hype up its machines ....just as the competitors do . Still ,being the 3 out of 3 consoles of the next generation is a bad sign.244k is a good number ,surprisingly good for a 600$ console, and it is the machine whose hardware moves more money ,but all said and done it still comes third .Yes ,things could improve something ...after all there hasnt been a single PS3 game in January and the supply while more than enough in some areas has been insuficient in others (for what I hear finding a PS3 in NYC and other big cities is still very very difficult )so supplying those cities could improve general numbers .Then ,the games must start to appear .....Oblivion ,NBA Homecourt ,F1 ,Motorstorm ,Virtua Fighter 5 ,Virtua Tennis 3 ,Rainbow Six ,Splinter Cell DA ,FEAR and all the others .....but being frank most of those wont arrive until march so the data of february will keep being the worse of the next gen machines .In march or april things should start to pick up a bit .In any case if Sony sees that the other machines are out of reach it should react quick ,unlike with the PSP ,and lower the PS3 price .Once this machine is at 400-500 $ with all its features it will sell like hotcakes . As for its others consoles ...well PS2 is still beating the X360 ,and if we have to believe the numbers the software sold has increased numbers year from year .Thats really incredible ...the PS2 is living its 8 year in the market ( if you include 2000 ) and it still kicks butts . Things are looking quite good for the PSP .This month its sales have been close to the DS and the software sold has remained strong (more than 1.5 million games sold and rewarding many third parties ) .The PSP sells strongly when it has good software and it is receiving very good games recently ....Sid Meier Pirates! ,Ratchet & Clank Size Matters ,The Warriors ,Gurumin ,Metal Gear Portable Ops ,Ace Combat X ,GTA Vice City Stories .......its a pity that the DS still outsells it only because mainly games of the 2005 as Brain Training,Mario Kart and Nintendogs and the usual Mario Bros and Pokemon ......I sometimes wonder if those games will carry the DS for the rest of the lifetime of the console ....

Considering that there are still launch aftereffects, but deffinitely not as big of a momentum as the Wii's. Also, 5 week period.

Well, lets compare the figures to Jan 2006 for a minute. Firstly - 5 week reporting season - so take 20% off *everything* (console sales, software sales, etc..). Jan 2006 - 360 sold 270k (now sold 265k) - same. Jan 2006 - PS2 sold 317k (now sold 270k) - down by about 15%. Jan 2006 - DS sold 177k (now sold 230k) - up by 30% adjusted. Jan 2006 - PSP sold 208k (now sold 204k) - the same. (no comparison for Wii or PS3, as they weren't out then). ... So the only console to show "adjusted" rises for the matching period 12 months ago - is the DS. Lets just wait until Pokemon DS comes out, and see what happens to the sales. (I am actually surprised - firstly that the DS *did* pick up based on last year, and that last year the PSP outsold it in the same period! Sony are going BACKWARDS with the PSP, not forwards). ... As for "its a pity that the DS still outsells it only because mainly games of the 2005 as Brain..." - for a system to sell well, the titles have to appeal to a wide audience. Its not about selling 20 games to 10 million people, its about selling 2-3 games to 100-million people. Wait for Pokemon, Brain Training II, Dragon Quest, FFXII - and a few surprises.

I think the PS3 numbers are irrelevant. It would be close to selling out at those numbers anyway - and once decent games come out, the excess stock will be picked up pretty quickly. By the end of the year (i.e. after Xmas 07) I'll be shocked if every PS3 & Wii on the planet isn't sold out. Less PS3 sales now, means more sales then.
