Forums - Sony Discussion - Where Sony went wrong with the ps3!!

The only obvious problem they have is that it has an expensive blue ray player in it. Yes, Their biggest selling point is also their weekest point.

1. It makes it the most expensive console on the market.
2. It bleeds Sony billions of dollars.

Not a fatal error by any means, but their biggest mistake in over 10 years.

Wow, PS3 started off really horrible.

What a difference 18 months has made.

Wii would still be market leader. You just need to let people try it and you'll understand that whether PS3 is selling same price, higher or lower, it doesn't matter, people just need to try the Wii and they will fall in love for it. On the other hand, if PS3 was priced below or at the same price as the 360, it is garanteed to outsell the 360 because of bluray alone. It would have meant that PS3 was selling at a fraction of what normal bluray players were going for. If PS3 didn't include a blu-ray player, it would have launched in 2005 and at roughly the same price as the 360, and developers wouldn't have included those mandatory install either thanks to blu-ray's slower read.

There biggest, and only mistake.

In answer to:

Q1) Nope. Nintendo would still be dominating. If low price point was the issue, the PS2 would be the one selling 300,000 a week (or whatever the figures are these days).

Nintendo is dominating because they've managed to capture a market by offering something that the only the PS2 had managed to do previously, the casual market. But they've done it so much better by incorporating an easy to pick up and play structure out of the box and then forcing you to buy un-necessary peripherals afterwards, where as sony got you to do the second one only last gen.

Q2) Nope. 360 would clearly be in 3rd place, just as the PS3 is at the moment. Difference is, PS3 will catch up by brand recognition alone, Xbox doesn't have that (yet).

Where Sony went wrong was it's die hard determination to have a successful format after its failures with Betamax, Pro Sticks and UMD. If not for this Blu Ray would not have been standard in every PS3. Delays with Blu Ray being ready to be released on the market meant that PS3 was released about a year later than it should be. Forcing Blu Ray on PS3 buyers also meant PS3 was released at a ridiculous price for a console. If PS3 had come out about 8 months earlier at $300 it would be a completely different story now. As great as the Wii is I think it would have faced an uphill struggle. As it is now things have reached the point of no return. The Wii is now the console to own and even if PS3 dropped to the price of Wii it would not make any difference as the consumer has now voted that the Wii is the console to own.

1) If they launched at the same price, the PS3 would be at like 40 million because it would not only have a cheap price, but the brand name people know. The wii would probably have like 20-25 million, and the 360 would have like 15 million

2) if the PS3 had launched ahead then I'd say it would be about a tie by now, and the wii would still be leading by a mile

i think leo-j have right....but i my eyes they coudnt really have lower price becouse off the hig produce costs...they cant do like microsoft and loos tousends of milions... sony aint as ritch as microsoft...the problem wasnt the price...the problem was that they moved to far in the step fron ps2 to ps3 so that they needed the higher price...

Good the job the PS3 isnt doing so badly now isnt it

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

Agreed. BUt for me personally... the only thing I hates was a 2x drive instead of a 4 or 8.... but i guess it was for manufacturing costs...
