Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Any trend to have multi-console games come out on the Wii first?

For the games that are coming out on all 3 consoles, will there be a trend to have the game come out on the Wii first?

Seems to me that with the creation time being shorter, that the Wii version could be already out and selling, bringing in revenue to support the game as it is completed for the PS3 and X360.  It would also allow for tweaking of the later version based on what the comments were about the Wii version.  Of course, this could wind up good or bad.

In reading the recent SPORE thread, many seem to think this would happen for that game.  http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=40411

Any comments?

It sounds good in theory, but as a game developer, and more importantly as a company, it is good business sense to release all versions of the product at the same time. If, say, they released Star Wars: The Force Unleashed earlier on Wii than other systems, more people would buy that version, and there would be fewer sales of the others. This hurts both your bottom line and your relationship with the manufacturers of said other systems.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

its called time exclusivity and no i dont think it will happen with wii first. they will release them all at the same time a sit makes marketing so much easier. it would be more beneficial to give the wii its own exclusive that utilises the full strengths of the system, aka overlord

In theory that might happen, but in practice most developers seem to be thinking "developing games for the Wii requires less manpower hours, so let's have fewer people working on the Wii version!".

I don't expect Wii versions of multiplat games to get a lot of special treatment, but the shorter dev times should show up in exclusives.

I can understand the idea of wanting to do all of the marketing at the same time.  However, SW:TFU is a good example of why they might want to release it at a different time.  First of all, tho a SW game, isn't it supposed to be somewhat different than the HD versions?  Also, I would agrue that the Wii version is going to be more casual, (ie not as difficult) and thus going towards a different crowd than the more hardcore gamers who would pick up the HD version.  Sales could be lost if the HD marketing drowns out the Wii version's marketing.

And what about the ultimate gaming company dilemma?  If say the Wii version of a game could be finished in November in time for the holiday sales, but the HD versions could not and would have to wait until say March.  To make the 'best' business decision, should the company go for the holiday sales, or wait until March to release the game all at one time?

Except Sony/MS will pay developers not to do such things.
